hello
Been meaning to ask this for a while. am exclusively BFdinfg my 12 week old daughtert and mum and othe friends have been going on about offering boiled water because she only poos twice a week. will this help? have to say its not something the MW or HV has ever mentioned. In fact I vaguely remember seeing something on here a while ago about it even being dangerous??

if you're BF you shouldn't need to.

My Mum and Nan was going on about this at Christmas but not because of poos but because DS might be thirsty..WTF??

Anyway it's normal for BF babies to only poo every few days..even up to 10 days so I wouldn't worry about it. Apparently it is dangerous if they have too much but I think they will have to drink a lot!

If she's ebf then she doesn't need water and her pooing only twice a week isn't a problem or down to constipation -- it's perfectly normal for an ebf baby and down to the different way they digest the milk.

Constipation is defined by hardness of poo- so if your DD poos twice a week, but the texture is soft, she's not constipated and there's no reason to give her water.
She could be going twice a day, but if poo was hard, that would mean she was constipated.

Thanks. I wondrered whether it was a 'generation' thing... just like when MIL came to stay when DD was 10 days old and kept making comments like 'whenever I see that baby shes on your boob...' etc etc. Mum asked me when she was 2 weeks old why she wasnt feeding every 3 hours yet. Obviously all stuff they were told when they were new mums. Shes feeding about every 3 hours now though (on a good day that is!)
