making other products from breastmilk

someone elsewhere mentioned they made yoghurt from their own breastmilk.

Is this possible? If so, what other stuff can you make? I've never even considered the idea was possible, now I'm intrigued

Weird - I was talking with DH about this at weekend and (we thought jokingly) if you could make mum's milk yoghurt, cheese or butter.

lucy5 · 29/06/2005 14:11

dont know, i used to mix mine with baby rice but thats quite bogstandard.

starlover · 29/06/2005 14:15

not quite the same, but i made flaked rice pudding with formula when i ran out of milk.

it would have been ok if i hadn't burned it onto the bottom of the pan.
dp threw the pan away because it wouldn't come off!

WigWamBam · 29/06/2005 14:17

I used to cook with mine sometimes, nothing fancy, just cheese sauce and so on.

morningpaper · 29/06/2005 14:17

I was the yoghurt-maker.

It was ok but a bit runny. I used a yoghurt-maker machine thing.

I also made egg-custard with it (breastmilk in small dish with egg yolk, baked in oven).

Also rice pudding.

Also hot chocolate.

I have a friend who made the sauce for macaroni cheese for the whole family! But didn't tell them.

WigWamBam · 29/06/2005 14:19

I made egg custard with it too, mp.

I think I would have drawn the line at macaroni cheese for the whole family though ...

morningpaper · 29/06/2005 14:20

I was tempted to make soap and give it to people for Christmas presents...

mogwai · 29/06/2005 14:20

at the macaroni cheese!
How inventive of you morning papaer, I'm impressed

morningpaper, who was the hot chocolate for?

morningpaper · 29/06/2005 14:46

me

Thing is, I had a lipase problem so I had to scald the milk to make it storable, but I got so pissed off with doing this because dd never drank it from a bottle anyway, and one day I had just boiled a pint and thought, feck it, and made myself a big hot chocolate and drank it myself.

starlover · 29/06/2005 14:47

breastmilk is actually quite yummy!

mogwai · 29/06/2005 14:49

is it very sweet?

OP posts:
morningpaper · 29/06/2005 14:50

yes like sugary cowsmilk

starlover · 29/06/2005 14:50

yeah it is quite sweet and waterier than you might imagine.

Nik72 · 29/06/2005 15:07

thank goodness i'm not the only wierdy who's tried theirs. it is really tasty and felt so happy dd was having such nice milk - now feel guilty that's she's on horrible formula (not that she minds!!!!).

starlover · 29/06/2005 15:29

nik i felt just the same about formula! in fact on one of my previous threads when i was struggling with b/f i said it was like being fed lovely gourmet food which is just what you love.. and then having it replaced with microwave meals instead.

DS is fully bottle fed now though, and he seems to like it enough! aptamil tastes closest to breastmilk, but DS can't have it as it makes him really sick

Nik72 · 29/06/2005 15:38

i reckoned dd couln't taste any difference till i tried hipp milk & she cried every time i gave it. She likes aptimil. Still have breast milk in the freezer so can have fun turning it into rice pudding now!! Or hot chocolate......

SamN · 29/06/2005 15:44

I have been wondering about making things out of my ebm for a while and also wondering whether to mention it on here in case everyone else thought it was just too wierd ! I even bought some vegetable rennet for cheesemaking, and enquired at the healthfood shop about yoghurt starters. But all the cultures seem to be based on cow's milk which is a problem in our house so I've given up on this idea. I also suspect I've developed a lactose intolerance because of avoiding milk for so long, so I wouldn't be able to taste the products myself .

There's a bit in the 'Fresh Milk' book about someone making ice cream from breast milk.

morningpaper · 29/06/2005 16:38

SamN I have lectose intolerance - not dreadful but if I drink cow's milk then I get awful bowel cramping and need medication to sort it out. But I didn't think about this when I tried my own bm - and it didn't have any negative effects.

Not sure what conclusions you might draw from that!!

SamN · 29/06/2005 17:07

that's intriguing morningpaper. sounds like the same symptoms I get if I accidentally have cow's milk. I might try some breastmilk-based recipes after all.

I suppose the lactose content of human milk could be different to that in other milks but I suppose I expected it to be the same or higher as it tastes so sweet.

lunachic · 29/06/2005 17:08

my mate squirted bm in her ex's tea when he was p*ssing her off
my dp wouldnt try it but hes quite happy drinking milk from a cows big ugly boobie (sorry cows !) ???????????

lunachic · 29/06/2005 17:10

sam n because its made for humans its bound to be more digestable than cows milk

Nik72, why have you still got EBM in the freezer. Will your dd not take it?

Nik72 · 29/06/2005 17:46

No, am just Bad Mummy - am too lazy. Keep meaning to defrost it for feeds. Poor little dd.....
