Do breast fed babies get colic

Its just that I'm having to move to bottles due to thrush that will not go away. Then to make me feel horrendously guilty in trying to move her to bottle she's now got colic and is not sleeping AND is constipated. We have bought Dr Browns and Apatmil easy digest, but now the easy to digest milk wont go through the teats so we've now had to hunt out faster flow. I feel like the worst decision I could have made was moving her to bottle! Have I caused her colic or do breast fed babies get colic anyway and I should stop kicking myself.

yes they do.

Well mine did..or maybe bf'd just made them miserable!

Wills, my dd had colic from 10days old. She was breastfed for about a month before movign onto formula, and her colic was exactly the same when she was breastfed, as when she was on formula.

Please don't beat yourself up. Have you tried Colief? I only found out about it after dd's colic finished, but I understand it's very effective.

We used gripe water which worked quite well.

nickytwotimes · 21/12/2009 21:19

Yes, bf babies get colic too.

If you do use formula, try COlief which breaks up the lactose. Worked for ds.

Shame you are having to stop bfing if you don't really want to stop - have you asked for help here? There are a few really knowledgable mners - Tiktok and a few others - who know loads. They mioght be able to help if you want to bf. If not, then I'd recommend the COlief.

EmilyStrange · 21/12/2009 21:19

Absolutely they do. Colic can kick in a few weeks after birth regardless.

my DD was exclusively BF and had colic from a week old have you tried ashton and parsons powders?? they were a godsend for us while DD had tummy ache and also colief drops can help. these last ones are expensive but worth every penny. i think the gp can prescribe them too
dont beat yourself up about moving from breast to bottle as sometimes it is unavoidable and in NO WAY reflects back on you in a bad light

SleightiesChick · 21/12/2009 21:27

My DS did and was breastfed all along. He just grew out of the colic in his own time. Don't blame yourself.

As nicky says, ask for help if you want to keep bfing. But don't beat yourself up if you absolutely can't.

Ds1 had colic. Ds2 had colic very very badly. Nothing worked, colief, gripe, alsorts , nothing worked.
Hope yours is not as bad as our was.

Thank you ladies, you've made me feel better. Wish I didn't have the breast feeding thrush but I have thrown EVERYTHING at it. I've been fully supported by my Gp and had loads of fluconazole so much so that my gp feels I have fluconazole resistant thrush. iv'e also been having probiotics, acidophilus, Grapefruit seed extract (YUCK), Daktarin gel on my nipples etc etc etc. I've also had my latch checked - its fine. But thanks guys for making me feel better.

ps, the final straw has been catching swine flu which being a chronic asthmatic has gone straight to my chest and so now I'm onto my second set of antibiotics and steriods cos I'm not getting better.

Yes, absolute nightmare. Infacol helped a bit Also, 'cos I genuinely suffered from under-supply (hormonal problems, polycystic ovaries), I could hear him gulping down air as he desperately tried to get some milk out of my rubbish boobs - used to have to feed in complete silence so I could check that his latch was right and he wasn't swallowing air. Ironically (and I'm not suggesting this as a cure all - was just 'cos I really didn't have much milk) he got a bit better when we switched to formula (though still didn't really clear up till the magic 13 week point, and even then he sometimes swallowed air - a friend fed him and commented "well I think he took some milk along with his air"). Faster flow teats do sometimes help - don't feel you have to stick to the ones suggested for her age. And go for long walks with her in a baby sling - she'll feel more comfortable being upright and it'll keep you sane. Good luck.

they do wills! All three of mine have had it, DS1 bottle fed, Dd and DS2 fully BF; please stop kicking yourself!

re the recurrent thrush though; have you both been treated? a 10 day course of oral fluconazole for you, cream for your nips and topical treatment for your baby? I was a bit of a martyr to thrush with my DD, and it took almost six months for us to be fully free of it.

ExplodingBananas · 22/12/2009 21:17

I was told to try my reluxy baby on the easy digest milk as I was told it was normal milk with thickeners to help it stay down.

It seemed to make my DS constipated and colicy without helping the reflux, so if you are sticking with formula you may want to try some different ones to see if it helps.
