Infant Gaviscon...

DS has been taking Infant Gaviscon for reflux since he was 6 weeks. He was bf until 14 weeks, is now ff at 22 weeks. Doctor told me to try Gaviscon first; if that didn't work she would give me a prescription.

The last few weeks, I have been trying him without the Gaviscon for one bottle a day every 4ish days or so. The reflux seems as bad as ever though. I thought most babies should have grown out of it at this stage??

Can anybody else tell me when they stopped using Gaviscon??

My ds1 had reflux well past the weaning stage.
My gp put him on gaviscon and said to use it for the entire time he's on formula. I refused and said that wasn't good enough and I wasn't happy to be adding things to formula like that, so he was put on prescription formula. It didn't stop the sickness, but he was more comfortable

Ok....thank you littleboyblue....

Would prescription formula be similar to 'normal' formula; but just with stuff added to stop the reflux?

I initially wasn't too happy adding something to formula; but I felt I had no choice; it was the only thing that stopped him vomiting, feeling uncomfortable all the time and losing weight.

What was the for?..........

Everything I read on reflux at the time said basically that it was because there was a weakness in the valve at the top of the stomach that would allow stomach acid to travel up causing sickness, therefore, I didn't expect the sickness to stop until the valve became strong enough, but I expected him to be more comfortable which he was on prescription.
I had him on gaviscon for 1 week and just didn't feel comfortable with it.
Your symbol has left me thinking you're trying to tell me I am a loon or something........

You can try feeding your bub as upright as possible and hold him upright after feeding. If you elevate the cot (put a phone book under each of the front legs) that helps too. Reflux does settle down when the valve at the top of the stomach tightens up. If you are lucky between 4 and 6 months. Otherwise it can take a bit longer.

If your bub is in pain from the reflux then medication helps, otherwise just wait until it settles down. If they are losing weight maybe look at thickened formula. Its a bit of a pain but it does stay down much better.

My 1st baby suffered with reflux and was a comlete nightmare to feed/wind/sleep - pretty much everything! We were prescribed Infant gaviscon for her and was using it for months - probably up until weaning point at around 6 months. I now have a 4 week old baby who seems to be showing exact same symptoms! NO!!! how unlucky can i be??? I have just read about a thickenning agent called carobel, made by cow and gate, and will be trying this for her. we have been using gaviscon for our 4wk old but doesn't seem to make the slightest bit of difference. (hence why we're trying the carobel) apparently you can but it from most chemists or at least order it in. Failing that ill be going to my GP for a prescrition as im not sure how much longer my washing machine will last??!! SO much washing with a reflux baby. i would ditch the gaviscon if its not helping and go back to your GP. It is really hard work being a mum with a baby who is so sick, so best to get as much help as you can and try EVERYTHING!! lol! let me know how you get on as i am becomming some what of an expert on reflux

Our DS has reflux, he is 13wks old. He has been having Gaviscon since he was 8 weeks.

It has helped us hugely. I am going to start trying to reduce it now (from monday)by one dose a day as per docs instructions.

The doc did suggest a thickened feed (Omneo Comfort) but felt that the Gaviscon would help more so I went with that.

Not sure how any of that helps you but it's just what we are doing.

Should have added - He is FF and the Doctor has said that if he has reflux symptoms again with the reductions then just to go back to treatment levels we have him at and try again in a couple of weeks.

I'm not too worried about the Gaviscon as long as DS is happy and thriving (he is)
