Towel under mattress to help trapped wind?

My 4 week old son has always been a windy soul, his trapped wind seems to be getting worse and he's crying a lot more this week.

I've just tried rolling a towel under his cot mattress so it's at an angle. About 45 degrees, I think. This resulted in a lovely fart but I'd never leave him like this at night because there's a gap between the mattress edge and the sides of the moses basket.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to whether or not this would work and if so, how I could do it safely?

With DS (who was also pretty windy) I used a towel initially in the moses basket which worked well and then I used a cot wedge under the mattress in his crib and then his cot so there were no gaps. It seemed to help prevent him from puking up the second I laid him down and definitely helped with farting (nice ). Twas also good when he got all bunged up with a cold as seemed to help drain the snot away from the back of his throat (bleurgh).

you can raise the cot or the moses basket stand (a couple of telephone directories under the back legs)

Ooooh yes, that's a good idea Ruby - then you don't have to worry about gaps in mattresses or pay for expensive cot wedges. Wish I'd thought of that - can I blame baby brain??!!
