Baby- slow weight gain

I have a 4 1/2 month old baby. She was born weighing 8lb 3 oz (so above average), and is now 12lb 13oz. If it weren't for the growth charts and noticing other babies growth around us, I wouldn't be worried- but she does seem to be gaining weight pretty slowly. At her last weigh in, she had only gained 1 oz in 2 weeks. I have just moved from feeding her every 3 hours to every 4 hours. She is exclusively breastfed, is alert, physically active, has frequent wet nappies and poos approx 2 times a day. Occasionally she has greenish stools, but mostly they are mustard yellow and sometimes grainy. She doesn't seem to cry for feeds, and thats the reason I feed her at timed intervals, to ensure she is feeding regularly (she mainly seems to cry when she is tired).

I've spoken to the health visitor and she didn't seem concerned- she said she's not skinny and is active and alert. Just wanted to see if people had any thoughts?

I was reading this thread earlier as I have some concerns about my DD's progress, and lots of reassuring messages on there - basically all babies progress in their own way.

If the HV isn't worried, you probably shouldn't be (easier said than done, though)

Having said that, I've had lumps and mastitis recently and am concerned about the amount DD is getting as she's been getting hungry - have bought formula in, but not cracked it open yet...

Minshu PUT DOWN THE FORMULA, you're fine. Just feed on demand.
DC3 15 months still breast fed, eats solids with great gusto isn't even 20lbs yet!
My mate's DD also exclusively breast fed reached 20lbs when she was about 8 months old.
All 3 of my children were BF and I would've called them all 'skinny' babies, no fat wrists, chunky thighs, no double chins.
All perfectly healthy and happy.

If you're concerned about her weight, banbo, and there is no obvious reason why you should be, then you can feed her more often - simple

Minshu · 19/12/2009 16:01

Thanks, treadmillmom - my supply seems to be getting back to how it "should" be (ie how it was before we both had our sniffles, etc), and am feeding on her increased demand so the formula is still only on standby. I had got used to her sleeping a bit longer at night, unfortunately

The reason I was worried enough to get her weighed and buy in the formula was that she seemed to be getting skinnier as she got longer. She's generally healthy, happy and alert, though.

Thanks Minshu, Treadmillmom and Tiktok. I'm making sure I don't let her go longer than 4 hours without feeding her (except at night when I do a dream feed at 10.30pmish and she then ususally goes through to 5/6am). Its something that I'll obviously keep an eye on, but try not to get too focused upon. I haven't been tempted to use formula so far, as my understanding is it could reduce my own supply if I start substituting. Before I know it, the whole weaning process will be starting at 6 months (can't believe how quickly time seems to be going!).
