Can I use Canestan to treat thrush on nipples?

I am pretty sure I have thrush on my nipples - they are red and sore and really hurt after bfing. I am starting to get pulling sensations in my breasts when feeding, and my DS also has a white coating on his tongue.

I can't get to the doctor until Friday.

I have a tube of canestanat home, can I use this on my nipples in the meantime? I have also seen the advice about a vinegar solution and will use this as soon as I can get some.

you can, but i think they normally prescribe a stronger dose. plus if you aren't treating baby as well it may not really do anything. you also need to remove it before feeding

how old is your ds? if he is over 3 months then you can get daktarin gel over the counter to use on him (in fact you can use that on yourself too, and you won't need to wipe it off)

I had this fairly recently and the chemist gave me the red tube of canesten (rather than the blue), and told me to use it twice a day after feeds.

I used canestan but it doesn't work very well IMO but will hopefully hold off the thrush spreading until friday, use it after every feed- also consider using a weak vinegar wash on your nipples. Good luck! I had thrush twice and only getting a prescription from my GP for flucozanole helped to clear it.

My DS is only 6 wks so unsure about using medication. I'll go for the vinegar for now.

Cheers guys, this is all very depressing.

I had thrush with my DD at about the same time. It was so so painful so I can really sympathise, it was like knives in my nipples every time she fed. It wasn't until a midwife came to see me that she diagnosed it. She prescribed something for me (sorry I can't remember the name of it) but it didn't have to be wiped off, it wasn't Canestan. She gave me something for DD's mouth as well. It might be worth ringing your local Midwife or Health Visitor maybe they could tell you what to get. Hope you feel better.

It's only recently that they stopped using Daktarin for under 3 months because they thought it was a choking hazard. Personally, I used it with my daughters (when it was ok) and I used it with my son (when they decided it wasn't!) but I was very careful to only use a tiny amount, not globs he could choke on. You /could/ put a liberal amount of Daktarin gel on your nipple pre-feed so he gets a good suck on it, but you won't get rid of it unless you treat both of you (and I'm not sure vinegar will do the job).

yes, it is only recent. and like Carmen I usd it on my ds too!

I have had horrid thrush that only cleared up with fluconazole, but when I had it again with ds2 it cleared up fine using canestan and daktarin. i guess maybe it depends on how soon you start treatment

Please don't put daktarin on your nipples - it contains alcohol and just dries them out making them even more painful.

You need to see your doc asap and get fluconazole plus cream.

SuperAmoo · 10/12/2009 09:01

you need Daktarin cream (miconozole cream 2%) - the previous poster is right - don't put daktarin oral gel on your nipples because it will cause you more pain.

ZippysMum · 10/12/2009 09:27

I put daktarin and then lansinoh on my nips when i had thrush and didn't have problemswith drying out.

My boys have permanent lansinoh 'moustaches' these days...
