Long Haul Travel w/formula - Use bottled water?

Hi, first time mummy here. We are off to the States to visit some family for the holidays and I am nervous about how to handle bottles on the flight.

DD (4mos) likes her formula warmed and I've heard that the airline flight attendants will provide boiling water if you ask. So I should half fill my bottles and then get the FA to fill the other half with freshed boiled water on the plane to bring the temp up.

My question is.. should I bring all my bottles half filled with boiled water from home? (But will then have to taste 50% of the liquid at security) Or can I just use buy Volvic/Evian/Hildon water in Boots after security and use that in my bottles?

[sorry if dumb question just want to be sure bottled water ok]

thank you!!

ps any other tips appreciated!

Hi,

I researched about this when I went to Spain. DS was 10 months and only needed a couple of bottles a day. I found out that bottled water still needs to be boiled, and in fact some types are not suitable to be used in infant feeding due to their mineral content. Evian etc was suitable, but only if boiled in a kettle like normal water from home.

In the end we took sealed cartons to get us there and back (about 4-5 cartons with single servings in). We were not asked to open these. Note that you can often buy these cartons in the airport lounge after check-in in any case, but you'd have to research if they sell the type you want. Once on holiday we had a kettle and those little single serving sachets (we had SMA). I also used steribottles to save the hassle of cleaning but might not have done if he had been having more than two bottles a day.

Thanks SUTB, unfortunately DD is cows milk intolerant so she is on Neocate, so we need can't use the pre-made formula mixtures. Meant to mention that. I will need to mix the bottles as we go.. Ok, thanks for the reply!

When I first travelled with my oldest DD, couldn't buy cartons of pre-made formula (now I feel old ).

So I got experimented at home with how long it took for a bottle of boiled water to cool and then tried to reasonably plan ahead on the plane. Bit of a faff- but one way round it.

Also, don't forget to rinse bottle when finished, warm left-over formula + warm plane = congealed milk.

Its not worth the hassle of having to taste the water going through the security check, plus it voids the sterilisation. I have brought sterilised empty bottles, and then gotten them filled with boiling water on board, which i then let cool. Time consuming, but the best option sterilisation wise
