Is it possible to make too much milk?

DD2 is now 14 days old. Feeding seems to be going well, she seems healthy enough, but I am alarmed at the sheer amount of milk I am making-sometimes it is taking me less than an hour to soak though a breastpad and two tops. I just fed her until she took herself off, then expressed off the same boob(using an electric pump) and had to stop when the 7oz pump was full, and the flow was still going.

Sometimes she seems put off by the amount of milk, she kind of splutters and cries. I am getting exhausted and incredibly hungry and thirsty. I can't remember what happened with DD1, although she came earlier and was a lot smaller. Does milk supply tail off after a while? What can I do to ease the discomfort when my boobs are full without encouraging them to make even more milk? Is there a brand of breastpad that is more absorbant? I'm just using various supermarket own brands at the moment.

I do love feeding her though I don't understand why people don't even give it a try.

If your let down is too strong for your baby you can hold a muslin to your breast initially until the flow eases a bit.

The amount of milk will calm down, normally by 6 wks I think I read somewhere (but it took a bit longer for me though)

If your breasts feel engorged it feels good to kind of lay face down in the bath!

My breast pad of choice is lasinoh for absorbancy & comfort.

Happy feeding

This page has lots of advice about fast letdown and oversupply.

Pumping all you can, after a feed, unfortunately just tells your body 'hey, the baby is drinking all this milk, make more!' which is not the message you want to send, I think.
