Hi all,

My DD is 16 weeks old and for the last few weeks she has been having very liquid poos. She poos twice or three times each day and lately they have been very liquid. Sometimes there has been in her poo something very sticky, like gelatine. I am vegetarian and I have been wondering if this is normal or I should take her to the doctors.

She seems fine. However I think she has started teething and I thought that this could be related to teething. I know that BF babys can go without a poo for a few days but this has never happened to her. I would much appreciate your comments. Thank you very much in advance

Yes. BF babies can poo very squirty poos every feed, or they can hardly poo at all, or anything in between.

The liquidiness is due to the fact she's obviously not eating fibre yet. I have heard that you can try increasing the amount of fibre you eat but can't vouch for that advice!

Hi frakkinaround,

Thank you very much for a quick reply. I am vegetarian so I already eat a lot of fibre with my meals. I thought that maybe this was affecting her poos.

What worries me a bit is that sticky string that sometimes she makes when she is pooing. It does not always happen but lately has been sometimes in her poos.

Hi. My DD is 11 wks and EBF, and she often has stringy runny poos. I've basically been told that as long as they're yellow, not to worry too much about the texture. HTH.

The sticky string is probably mucus. Certain foods stimulate mucus production so after eating those foods you may notice an increase in mucus because whatever you eat goes into your BM. Milk and wheat proteins commonly cause an increase in gut mucus in adults so your DD might be more mucusy after you've had lots of either of those.

It's nothing to worry about though and unless your DD is very uncomfortable you don't need to change your diet
