Breastfeeding and exercise? Lactic acid concern

gotogirl · 29/11/2009 13:51

Have been bfing DC for 10 months, all going well and I have lost all the pregnancy weight through moderate dieting. Question now: can I start to exercise? I have been told to avoid cardio as this produces lactic acid which will be present in breast milk.

Is this true?

Do I have to wait until we stop bfing to start going for a run?

Tis a load of rubbish. I took up running when dd was 12 months. She is 2.6yrs now and I run 4/5 times a week. I am still bfing.

We all started doing 'buggy fit' classes after 3 months and there were no lactic acid issues! You can start doing gentle exercise (yoga, brisk walk and swimming) after 6 weeks. Just make sure you keep fluid intake and calories up.

Well, I've been exclusively breastfeeding my 7 month old son and I also tandem-fed for 3 months. I started exercising when DS2 was around 4 months old and I exercised and breastdfed DS1 throughout my pregnancy. Neither boys have complained! I've done lots of cardio, jogging etc and all seems fine. I've never heard anything about avoiding exercise, to be honest, and I've been breastfeeding for 3 years now.

I do need fairly strong bra support though!

Also my friend did the Manchester 10K when dd 6 months old and still bf! No problems at all!

the amount of lactic acid dimishes to insignificant at 30 minutes post execise...see linkwww.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1889945

Not too long after having my PFB I read that babies may dislike feeding immediately after exercise taken by their mama due to changes in the flavour of breastmilk. Observing my DD closely, I concluded that this was either a) rubbish or b) I wasn't running fast enough

The human race probably wouldn't have got very far if there was a problem with feeding and exercise...

That's the way I'd look at it anyway. Go for it I say

I had a bit of a problem, when I took a rock climbing course, when DS2 was six months old. But that was about six hours of new and really hard exercise.

Lactic acid is created by anerobic exercise, not aerobic - so anything that builds new muscles.

And the problem it created for us was a slightly whingy baby, nothing big.

Well this looks unanimous but I will add my "me too". I asked about this when N was a few months old but was reassured and joined a gym (because they had a creche!)I have never been very fit but we had no issue with breastfeeding after exercise. I also managed to leave her in the creche for an hour even though she would not take a bottle, even eith expressed milk. Staff only came to find me once as nothing but a feed would do.
