Who has used DAKTARIN gel in a 5 week old baby??

Was it easy to use?

I am worried about using it as I have been told that it is not safe for babies of this age and a choking hazard, due to it's thick sticky consistency.

The gp prescribed for ds2 ( and me)last night.

I have. I think it gave dd diarhoea but no choking. Is the thrush obvious? If it is just put it on the obvious bits. I think he's more likely to choke on your finger when you're applying it. Have you been prescribed the cream?

I used it on 10 day old dd, GP prescribed also. I found it fine.

princessmel · 27/11/2009 14:01

Yes the gp prescribed it last night for both of us.

Plus Ab's for me. She thinks I might have mastitis too. Had a temp last night and was feeling a bit fuzzy all day. Had lots of breast pain in left breast on wednesday but not so much since.

Antibiotics when you've got thrush is a BAD idea - you'll just end up getting thrush again.

Take probiotics.

Avoid abs at all costs until the thrush is completely gone. It so annoys me that gps have so little knowledge of breast thrush. Have you got any symptoms or is it just in ds mouth?

princessmel · 27/11/2009 14:14

Really? Oh I suppose it is...I didn't think of that.

I have the odd tingly feeling in my nipple sometimes but not pain throughout a whole feed like I have read about.

I am really confused now.

my poor dd had thrush and i used this with her on and off for weeks and weeks, it can be hard to clear.

i liked that i could use it on us both, so much simpler than some of the other options. the HV said the choking thing was, as you say, because of the consistency but if you're careful applying it to db i'm sure it'll be fine.

Breast thrush is pretty much the worst pain imaginable - much worse than cracked nipples. My nipples looked burnt - red and shiny. I also had pain deep inside which went on for an hour or so after feeding. You should definitely treat yourself even if you don't have these symptoms. Be careful about using breast pads for too long and wash everything on a hot wash e.g. bras. If your ds uses a dummy or ebm in bottles sterilise them regularly.

We used it when DD was about 12 days old. But her thrush never fully went until she was maybe four months (and homeopath seemed to help shift it). But she was fine with it and didn't have any adverse affects.

mollybob · 27/11/2009 16:47

I've used it but it was rubbish - too sticky to get into DD's mouth - was then given nystatin liquid and her thrush and mine went within 48h

princessmel · 27/11/2009 18:14

Rocksock, did you not get it in your breasts aswell?

Mollybob that's good to know. I have heard before that it's no good! It all depends on the child I suppose.

I used it with my DTs at 12 days very briefly, the thrush was only on their lips and palates though. Think it was me who gave you the advice wasn't it? Just smear a small amount in an even layer on the tip of your finger and apply it carefully to the affected area. If you are using it for your nipples only apply it after feeding so it doesn't get transferred to the baby's mouth. The gel is not meant to be too effective on nipples but I found it did seem to work for me although the cream is better.

Here's a good informative link about the gel - link

No - never had it in my breasts thankfully. DD just had it orally for four months, I never had it in breasts at all.
