Sicky baby

Hi

My son is 7 weeks old and has just started vomiting up some of his feed, this can happen up to two hours after feeding. He used to just swallow a lot like he's swallowing stuff back down but he has been sick 3 times today after feeds. Any ideas? He is putting on a decent amount of weight so should I be worried? Does anyone have any experience of the swallowing stuff back down thing?

hi i don't want to ignore you but obviously i dont have answers. i dont know if this is your first baby or what you have considered so apologies if this is patronising.

It sounds like reflux. but all babies vomit (or posset) - all my babies, almost all the time and they swallowed it back down seems normal.

Reflux is more violent, i heard it can hit a wall - its like heartburn and they can be eating but not put on weight (failure to thrive). however my second child was diagnosed with reflux even though she didn't do violent vomiting but did look like a cow chewing the cud so they told me sometimes feed comes back up but isn't violently spewed up. she - and her older sister and younger brother - all dropped two centiles in weight so were being investigated because of failure to thrive (ftt). I think it's a cover all diagnosis when they can't find something wrong personally.

I dont think either of the above are anything to worry about unless he loses weight.if he's in pain they can give sort of baby gaviscon.

Finally, my first daughter also had ftt and was sick a lot. i ignored it. when she didn't put any more weight on i eventually put her on formula and discovered that she was allergic to dairy which made her vomit and get hives. dairy goes through breastmilk.

I would suggest you talk to the hv about it just to rule out anything major and if the vomiting gets serious cut out dairy and see if it makes any difference.

I hope that helps some. x

My DD2, now 11 wk, suffers from silent reflux, which means very little vomiting, but lots of swallowing, hiccups and runny nose. she also used to be really difficult to settle and to put down. How is your son? Is he usually a happy baby?

Hi guys

Thanks for the answers, I am taking him to gp this morning just in case but it does sound like silent reflux as he does get hiccups as well! He is usually a happy baby and seems ok this morning but taking him just to make sure as he is still jaundiced and they said to take him in if he seemed not himself.

Have seen gp who says may be reflux but don't give meds unless it keeps upsetting baby. Baby seems to start hiccupping when he is feeding now, still worried!
