What book is good to read about breastfeeding?

After 3 months of breastfeeding I've realised that all the general baby books I have like the Baby Whisperer are pretty inaccurate or lacking in detail. I do have a really old breastfeeding book by Sheila Kitzinger but that seems to talk more about the breastfeeding relationship and didn't cover all the practicalities. Can anyone recommend one?

the LLL 'the womanly art of bfing'

or Bestfeeding (which I think is NCT)

well spotted that BW etc are crap re bfing, but if you're 3m in you're probably doing ok yourself...

What is it you need to know?

MN can answer your questions specifically, better than any book can!

Any there's a lot of reading on Kellymom too.

I saw a lovely new one called 'The Food of Love' recently. Unfortunately I couldn't think of an excuse to buy it for myself, but I wish it had been out when DS was born.

Don't read books about bringing up children, they're all rubbish...

The best thing that I did in preparation for BFing, was talk to friends who had BF (and encourage them to be honest!), google BFing videos and see "how it was done" - I think there is one on MN as well, and ask friends to see how they BF. Unfortunately only one was BF at the time and was not comfotable with this, looking back maybe it was an insensitive thing to ask (I later found out she was having trouble with it) so maybe that's not a great plan unless you are fairly sure people will be OK with it. I was maybe a bit over-eager!

I also read a stack of books and took various things from them, some of which I now realise were iffy, and went to a couple of BF talks, which I was a bit with at the time and broadly ignored.

In the end everything went fine, so that was good.

What is it that you want to find out about?

Ina May Gaskin has a new one out - its fab

AppleAndBlackberry · 26/11/2009 21:02

Sorry, I should have said it's not for me - I was thinking of a book I could buy for a friend or recommend to people. Lots of people I've met seem to end up using formula because they think they don't have enough milk for the baby or are breastfeeding really well but really worried about it. I was also kind of wondering if a good book even existed after having read so many unsatisfactory ones.

the womanly art of breastfeeding

ImSoNotTelling · 26/11/2009 21:50

MN is the only BF resource any woman needs

goldenpig · 26/11/2009 22:42

Go to love the title!!!!

Food Of Love, Your Formula For Successful Breastfeeding

goldenpig · 26/11/2009 22:43

Meant to read 'got' to love the title!

That book title really tickled me!

PacificDogwood · 26/11/2009 22:46

Personally, I did not like "The Womanly Art...", sorry!

"Breast feeding" by Dr Sears helped me a lot.

Also would second kellymom and Dr Jack Newman websites.

If you have current problems, do seek face-to-face advice in RL, though. No amount of reading and talking to people is a substitute for that, IMO.

zgaze · 27/11/2009 09:25

I second the vote for 'The Food of Love' - brilliant book and very funny in places. It has really helped me.

Haven't really read any bfing books. I did read the Baby Whisperer after having fed DD for 2.8 years. It was leant to me by my SIL and after reading it I can see why she gave up after 1 day.

I have read Baby Calming by Caroline Deacon.

It does cover bfing but also explains lots of other things that babies do and why they do them, so is a good one for Parents-to-Be.

I found it really useful and wish I'd read it before having my first DC.
