dd2 has been EBF for 4 months and doing well. dd1 was bottle fed as she refused RH breast from begining so I expressed and fed in a bottle and it led eventually to ff.

DD2 has chest infection and has been wheezing. Is also teething like a fiend. Went off RH breast when teething last time but this is worse. She screams and screams if I try and feed her on that side. Other side is fine, no problems. Am going demented. have tried rugby balling under the arm but she is very long and is also not fooled by this tactic! it is also very difficult to do when out and about.

Am really worried as am supposed to be going to blue planet aquarium but PIL, DH and both kids on Friday. Is a nightmare. last few days I've timed going out so that feed when we are out is on LHside but can't do that for a full day out.

Feed I've just tried before bed left me and her both crying I'm afraid that by keeping trying and her keeping crying it's going to make her phobic of that side like dd1 was. bf has been going so well up to now, so much so that she won't take a bottle except one of ebm from dh in her sleep at 10.30pm! that said since she's been ill she's refused that also.

Please help!

Be calm, it will be OK. Sorry you are having such a bad time. My advice, though it may be wrong (only a feeding mum myself not a bfc) would be to stop forcing it and let her have all her feeds from the left side and to express the right hand side while you feed her from the left (will help the milk flow and save you time) whenever you are at home to keep up your supply in the right side. Store the milk, don't feed it to her. That way you should at least maintain your supply and at most end up with an abundance of milk. Try her again when she's over the sickness.

wondered if it could be an ear infection making it painful on that side?

alibobble · 26/11/2009 08:06

curiosity yes am pumping. was thinking about abandoning that side untilshe's better. saw doc. says chest infection. no pulling of ear. wondered if it was harder to breathe when on that side?

DS has gone off LH breast when he has a cold which I think is because one nostril/sinus blocked up more than the other - could it be that? - but can't be much help I'm afraid as rugby ball feeding sorted it (propped up with cushions).

Just feeding from one side and pumping sounds sensible, but you could try calling a breastfeeding helpline?
