Ds refusing a bottle.

Hi all, at my wits end with DS and need some help/suggestions please!!

He was bf until 13 weeks, however from 10 to 13 weeks he was fed EBM from a bottle as he outright refused the breast. I attended LLL meetings, consulted my Doctor and Public Health Nurse, and there seemed to be no reason as to why he was refusing the breast apart from preferring bottles. He also had reflux but that has been sorted out.

The problem is, after 4 successful weeks of FF, he is now refusing the bottle. I have tried different formula. I have tried different sized teats.

The only way I can get him to drink is by using distraction, i.e having him look out the window or walking around with him and feeding. This usually works only for a short while and he will take an ounce or two.

He takes most feeds when sleeping, and will generally take c. 5 ounces in a 'dreamfeed'.
All in all, he probably gets about 20 ounces a day when he should get 35. He is hungry, he seems to do his hungry cry, then take the bottle for a few seconds, and then he refuses it.

This has been going on for about 8 days now, and I am worried he is not gaining enough weight. He lost weight before when he was refusing the breast, and I'm afraid it will happen again.

He is getting weighed on Monday.

I think he is teething, he is a little cranky, dribbling and chewing everything, but surely this can't put him off his bottle for eight days?

Any help/suggestions appreciated.

sorry but I think he still has symptoms of reflux. Even if he isn't vomiting he could still be experiencing silent reflux where he is regurgitating his milk into his oesophagus.

the commonest symptom of this is that they will happily take the bottle for a few minutes then start refusing and fussing. la leche league have some good info on it.

Thanks Nellie, will ask nurse about it on Monday. He is on Gaviscon as his reflux was only ever mild. It seemed to sort it out quickly he is'nt vomiting at all now.

how old is he now? It might be teething, the pain is there until the tooth cuts. You could try a cup or beaker?

He is 18 weeks. I think it is teething, poor chicken

Might try a beaker, thanks curosity.
