bf baby with croup - will supply recover?

Hi - just wondering how worried to be about bf situation here. Have 14 wk old baby who's had croup since Saturday and is feeding sporadically and not for any length of time. Sometimes has small feeds every 2-3 hours. Sometimes is refusing the breast completely.

I'm trying to express after each time he 'feeds' and about every 4 hours if he hasn't fed during that time (if he's refused). This morning I got a decent amount of EBM - about 4oz first thing after a short feed. But now, after another failed feed only got 20 ml from both breasts. This is despite the let-down happening when I first put him to the breast.

Help - I'm panicking a bit and have little time as have 2 other dcs. Do I need to worry so much about this - will supply recover on its own once baby feels better? Or shall I persist with the pump?

The GP said this morning that he's ok, not dehydrated and will recover in a few days. His poos are mainly green!!!

I understand that, once milk supply is "established", it can go up and down as needed. I must admit that I was very lucky in having a very flexible supply, which could have been because I have fairly large breasts, so there was somewhere for the milk to go if it wasn't drunk immediately (??). But if this weren't built into our physiology, we would be pretty rubbish animals! (and babies before formula would never have survived any loss of appetite). I'm not sure whether 14 weeks is long enough to be "established", but should think so (look up/ask your HV about "established" feeding).

Make sure to drink LOADS of water when resuming feeding.

Good luck!
