DD2 starts fussing as soon as she starts BFing?

My DD2 has had a funny tummy since birth (green poo, constant straining, every nappy dirty, fussing and spuirming while feeding, reflux, food intolerance to stuff I'm eating) - I've usually been able to settle her tummy by eating a very bland boring diet and by giving her lactaze enzyme but now I dispair. She's five months today and her tummy still isn't sorting itself out really. Her nappies are getting greener if anything and now, within about 20 seconds of starting a feed she starts thrashing about on my boob (which bloody kills) and straining for the loo and kicking her legs and arching her back. It's not an overactive letdown as I feed with her on top of me. She doesn't cry I might add. Although she wakes up from naps crying as if in pain after about half an hour usually. What could it be?? Any ideas?

you say she's got reflux? What meds is she on? The arching, thrashing and kicking are classic for reflux. Maybe she needs stronger meds.
In terms of grren poo - could be intolerance but you've mentioned that - what foods have you tried excluding?

no meds as she hardly ever cries so she's obviously not got pain with it. I'd describe her as a happy spitter as long as I avoid the usual reflux no-nos like fruit, onion, garlic, vinegar etc. She has cow milk protein intolerance and I can't tolerate soya products myself so I don't have any of that in my diet. She is also intolerant to eggs. She's not bothered about lying flat on her back (though her mattress is propped up abit just to stop her choking. Bascially I don't think it's reflux that's causing this. It seems more a bowel thing - when she starts feeding she starts straining as if she needs a poo - she goes red in the face sometimes - I take her off but no poo is forthcoming - put her back on my boob and the straining starts again. ????

My ds did this until about 6 weeks ago (he's 8 months now). I never really got to the bottom of whether it was an intollerance or not but if it was he must have grown out of it. I do know that when babies feed it causes peristalsis in their intestines which obviously pushes the poo along. I read somewhere that when they are young it's a bit hit & miss so it gives them tummy ache as gas can get trapped.

thanks Taramuddle - that's reassured me abit. I did wonder about that as when babies are young, including my own DD1, they often fill their nappy during or straight after a feed. DD2 has always had difficulty pooing - hopefully she will grow out of it then just like your DS.

Maybe silent reflux? DS did this, though much younger than your baby (6 weeks). I started Infant Gaviscon a week or so ago (asked GP for it) and things are much better.

Good luck.
