Training to be a breast feeding counselor

Hi there,

Can anyone advise on the best training to become a bf counselor?

I would love to do a course and originally had hoped to do the NCT course but that is a no goer as you had to have bf for 6 months and I stopped at 5. (Not my choice!! dd decided that my breasts were quite ridiculous all of a sudden, so I expressed and gave her that in a bottle for our last month).

I am sure that the NCT course cannot be the only decent one out there as the midwives were teaching in the wards and the NHS lactation expert wasn't affliliated to the NCT either.

I didn't use an NCT bf counselor when I started as there wasn't one in my area and the phone line advice wasn't much different to that given in the hospital. So when we couldn't get started I hired a private lady who was fab and got us going. She however had been a midwife 20 years prior so had heaps of experience but also wasn't affiliated to the NCT or any other organisation.

If anyone has taken a different route I'd love to hear about it. I am a good teacher and feel that I have a lot to offer but want to learn as much as I possibly can on a reputable course.

Thanks.

Where I am, the PCT run peer support worker courses, try your local trust. Three months' feeding required here. Best of luck
