Hi
Ds is 7 and 1/2 months and woke up at 2am on tues night and had been sick. I waited a while and offered him a breastfeed which he then brought back up and was then sick 3 more times before noon on wed, I rang docs who said probably just a bug and to bring him in if he was sick again, he hasn't been and seems happy enough however, the problem I have is ds is formula fed in the day and has been since last wk when I cut out the final morning feed. Since wed he has only taken small amounts of formula and is refusing to take any since he had 1 oz at 10am today. I have been breastfeeding him whenever he wakes at night and I gave a feed yesterday morning too which he seemed to get some milk from.
He won't go near a bottle as of 10am and will only take one or two sips of water. I am continuing to offer him a breastfeed although he dosn't seem to be getting anything, if I continue doing this will I be able to reestablish my supply? I don't want to keep offering if he's getting nothing and won't do for some days, I need to get him to drink, although he did have almost a whole weetabix this morning with a little whole milk, maybe thats out him off taking anything else in today? I am waiting for a call back from nhs direct but not sure if they will be breastfeeding experts..
I feel so guilty that this is the only thing that he will take and i'm not able to give it to him at the moment. Thanks for your help.

Sorry about your ds

I'm not understanding this, sorry....why can't you just bf him?

Just keep offering - your supply will bounce back, you have been bf for long enough for this to happen fairly quickly.

Sorry if I wasn't clear, he didn't seem to be getting anything from breastfeeding this afternoon and it was a bit painful. If my supply can easily be brought back up I'll keep on offering. Nhs direct just said I would make myself sore so keep offering formula. Thanks for your response.

NHS direct are not the greatest source of bf info

Can't think why you would make yourself sore - doesn't make sense.

Ah....you said it was painful. In what way?

TomThumbMum · 20/11/2009 17:34

He had a good try on both sides and it made my nipple quite sore, he sucked quite hard and didn't seem to be getting anything. Its not in anyway painful enough that I can't persevere. I still do one or two night feeds which don't hurt at all. Thanks again tiktok.

I think it's a question of judgement, really - if you really think he is getting nothing, then of course you'll make sure he gets fluids other ways, but still keep offering and trying. With 2 feeds in 24 hours and fuller bf until recently, I'd be very surprised if you did not feel and see a real difference in supply within a day or so, truly, as long as you keep up with the offer.

Not sure why it would be sore, sorry.
