I know this isn't really a feeding question but she's getting distressed because she can't feed properly. Nose really blocked, are there baby decongestants I can try? she was in the bathroom while i had a shower but doesnt seem to have helped.

I have used saline drops up the nose to clear it before feeding. Breastmilk's just as good (if not better) if your aim's good . I also put children's Olbas Oil on a tissue and put it under the cot/pram/sheet to help their breathing while they're sleeping.

Oh, and I do have one of those contraptions to suck the snot out of the baby's nose. And have also, prior to purchase of said contraption, sucked the snot out myself.

Seconding saline drop = there are some called nasosal but tiny bottle

StealthPolarBear · 17/11/2009 11:12

would be happy to snot suck but couldnt see anything!
Anyway, as usual after an MN post the problem has resolved, huge sneeze, happy baby, catching up on milk now. have been waitig for thast since 2am!!

Poor baby breast milk squirted, wait a couple of mins then suck is really the best option. Do you have an oral syringe? I find putting a bit of milk in that and using it to aim is best. If you manage to get the milk just below her nose so that she inhales it then it works really well. I have some olbas oil if you get desperate and some snuffle babe though they are both 3 months +.

Poledra · 17/11/2009 11:18

Maybe you just need a feather to tickle her nose with and make her sneeze?

Glad she's feeling a bit better, and catching upon her feeds.

DD has had a stuffy nose over the past two days I have found that breast milk just dribbled gently into her nostril really did work.

Indith · 17/11/2009 11:19

Oh bless her

StealthPolarBear · 17/11/2009 11:37

and will try bm (prob tonight )

Hello, my wee boy has been suffering for the last couple of days too

The nasosal drops do seem to work, although he is not too impressed when they are put in. He may have had some milk up there too but that was an accident

I chickened out of the snot sucking device and also sucking it out myself. Have been collecting snot when the poor boy sneezes.

He has managed to feed fine, but has been sick a few extra times with the mucus annoying him.

Hope she is better soon - i think they are about the same age - 8 weeks?

StealthPolarBear · 17/11/2009 12:56

yes! Glad you've had some success with drops and snot sucking, I'll give that a go tonight.
Actually DD has been bringing up some milk whereas normally she's the least sicky baby I know (don't think I've actually washed a dirty muslin yet, just clean ones!) wonder if that's related?

Oh sorry I chickened out of the 'manual' snot sucking too - that was really badly written. The drops on their own seem to be enough to help him for now. If he gets distressed agin I might try it though! Sometimes when he sneezes it's all over his top lip

Yeah he only does occasional small sick unless he is laid down too quick after a feed so we have noticed a difference. He put on about 13oz this week so seems to have been making up for it ok. He has fed almost every hour this morning so I think he must be thirsty.

StealthPolarBear · 17/11/2009 15:41

well not sure what the bm up the nose was meant to achieve but about 30s after trying it she sneezed and a whole load more flew out. So a success as far as I'm concerned!

See? See? Now will you believe me and Indith the next time we tell you something??

StealthPolarBear · 17/11/2009 15:58

so was that what it was meant to do? I have no idea!
Anyway I have a breathing easily, smiling daughter at the moment, so I'm happy

And if you go to the co-op, buy one of theri chocolate cakes and leave it on my doorstep the good fairies will come out and take her cold away.

StealthPolarBear · 17/11/2009 16:28

just discovered DS is scared of cockerels so i think fairies would terrify him!
