Anyone bf on an intercity train?

I'm taking 4.5m DD into the office next week to introduce her to my workmates, say hello and generally catch up. I live in Rugby and used to commute into London, so it was a pretty long journey every day.

I'm figuring that it'll be best to try to feed her on the train as I don't really want to have to find somewhere at Euston to do it or have to feed her in front of my colleagues in the office, think it would be fairly awkward...I'm hoping the train won't be packed if I go off-peak, but am worried in case I'm stuck sitting next to an old bloke or anyone else who might object/be embarrassed. I do feed in public when necessary, but have never really relished it.

i fed my DS (7 weeks old) on a national express train last week (stansted express route) - it was very busy, and i was surrounded by blokes, and one woman who stared at me the whole way (was quite disconcerting!).

nobody said anything, except the woman, who got off at the smae stop as me and commented on how well behaved and quiet DS was. I said it was because I'd been feeding him all the way home - and she hadn't noticed at all! and i have comedy sized boobs just now, way bigger than baby's head. you'll be fine!

domesticslattern · 16/11/2009 17:40

Yes I did. A blimmin group of blokes on their way to a stag night got on and started arsing around, drinking, shouting etc. Not one of them noticed that I fed her all the way!- just thought I was holding her tight! Just sat by the window and turned towards the wall a bit- bingo, easy.
Have a nice day out sassy.

I've fed on buses, trains and planes. With a tiny baby people seldom notice, and wouldn't stare or say anything anyway I'm sure. Go for it, it will be fine.

I have loads of times, all the way from London to Scotland (it felt like). Really, no-one batted an eyelid and my DD is 20 months.

As you say, it will be off-peak so if you're feeling a wee bit nervous about it, at least it won't be busy, and there are usually loads of seats spare if it is off=peak so if you feel awkward sitting next to someone you can always move and find two seats on your own.

It will be fine. Hope you have fun!

Have done - no trouble with other passengers, but the table got in the way a bit!

Yes, it was fine, don't worry.

Stayingsunnygirl · 16/11/2009 18:02

I have too - in my experience, most people don't notice if it's done reasonably discreetly.

Anyhow - they have a choice - quiet, breastfeeding baby or hungry, screaming baby.

JustAnotherManicMummy · 16/11/2009 18:07

Yes I have. But then I'll do it any where.

As Stayingsunnygirl says, the alternative is much, much worse for everyone.

However, I would not recommend employing the tactic DH witnessed on the tube once - a woman who got both boobs out to feed the one baby. Drafty and a bit page 3 crossed with Prima IYKWIM.

Suitable clothing is essential!

i breastfed on the train to and from paris. no one batted an eye. (except the man whose seat i was sitting on as i didnt want to feed in front of my father, [extreme silly twat emoticon please] and when he realised what i was doing, was perfectly happy to go off and find another seat.
on way back, i just fed where i was sitting. full train. quiet happy baby.

domesticextremist · 16/11/2009 18:16

Yes its absolutely fine - better in the aircraft type seats than the tables though iyswim.

The only thing I struggle with on the trains on my own is putting the buggy away while holding the baby but if you're slinging then you'll be fine...

sassyhopper32 · 16/11/2009 18:25

Thanks for all the replies! Sounds like I'll be fine!

I have booked an airline seat, rather than table seat, so that should be ok, and when I booked my ticket today they said that a staff member would be there on platform to help me get on the train with the pram, and as long as no disabled person needs the wheelchair space I can park the pram there. The seat is right by the shop apparently though, hope there isn't a large queue there....

I used to commute an hour or so to work so took DD1 in to meet my colleagues by train at about 7 weeks old. I BF her on teh way there and back.
NO comments but many approving looks when I stopped her screaming in record time
Definately get airline seat, tables are a nightmare, and practise buggy and sling as it's a complete nightmare.
