Please recommend some breastfeeding tops

When I had DS, we stayed at home a lot so feeding discreetly was not a problem.

On the odd occasion that we went out, I had 1 flip down vest which I wore under normal tops so I could hide my gross tummy from the world while I hide away and fed.

This time I'm not going to have the option of staying home so much as DS gets stir-crazy if he's kept home for too long and I'm no where near as embarassed about feeding as I'd worked out how to do it witout getting my whole nork out by the time DS was done - but I'm still likely to have a yukky, stretched out, stretch marked tummy to hide - so I'd like to get some nice b/fing tops to wear while we're out and about.

I've had a look in Mothercare but I don't like the way the two layers of the front of the top are stitched together all the way to the bottom down each side - surely, when lifting the top layer high enough to get to boob, you'll be pulling the bottom layer up too? Either that, or they're maternity style tops with huge ruched fronts - I'm probably going to still look pregnant enough without enhancing the effect by wearing that style of top!!

I've had a look online too but it's hard to tell what the tops will be like in RL

Can anyone recommend some good maternity tops?

I'm likely to look pregnant for a good few months after baby is born (I do not pop back unfortuneatley ) so I'd prefer something that would disguise my tummy too if possible...

Hiya

I never bothered with bf tops, just used my usual t shirts. I felt incredibly exposed with the bf tops, having to flip down panels etc. To hide the wonderful mum-tum, how about getting some of those bump support type things? That's my plan for #2 since I'm not as boingy as I used to be!

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 15/11/2009 22:26

I like the H+M ones, but I'm quite small in the norkage dept (36b). Friends who are bigger than me haven't found them as good.

Lionstar · 15/11/2009 22:32

I got a couple of tops in Blooming Marvellous that were OK, but they do the full range of ruched awfulness too. I have been thinking of getting a Breastvest to use under regular t-shirts.

Taramuddle · 15/11/2009 22:36

I buy cheapo spaghetti string strap vests from Primark or the like, the ones that either have loads of elastic in the straps or extendable straps. I kind of wear them with the straps long so they are only under my boobs. Then I wear normal lift up type top but the vest covers my blobby middle.

Proper nursing tops just look like nursing tops & are mostly overpriced & limited in choice.

Sorry if that was a terrible explanation but I am v tired from having stayed up too late looking at MN!

KnitterInTheNW · 15/11/2009 22:38

I'm large of nork (was 40G while bf) and only wore H&M ones. Loved them.

GoldenSnitch · 16/11/2009 08:56

I'm usually a 30G so they'll be even bigger when feeding!! (and possibly not go back either - I was a D cup before DS was born!)

I will have a look in H&M, thanks Kintter and IWIWMO.

I've also got some up-to-my-armpits tummy holding in pants to try to help with the saggy belly which will help disguise things while wearing normal tops.

I'm thinking a couple more flip down vests to go under normal tops might end up being the best option after all

I like 'Boob' tops, I have 2 vest type ones which can be worn in summer or winter if you pop a cardigan over the top. They are not that cheap but they hold their shape and are so much easier to feed in that any of the ones with cut outs round the breasts

www.nctshop.co.uk/BOOB-Nursing-top-short-sleeve-Black/productinfo/1252/

Loads of online shops stock this brand, it is swedish I think.

olivo · 16/11/2009 09:34

I got this one it has little slits hidden under the cardi part to get your boobs out.quite expensive but washes well.

devilsadvocaat · 16/11/2009 09:40

new look hav some button up the front tops which i've got. just put a muslin over shoulder and boob and unbutton.

cheap as chips

devilsadvocaat · 16/11/2009 09:41

(the style of the top hides jelly belly too)

olivo · 16/11/2009 10:14

devilsadvocaat, does it look like you can take the elastic out of the waist? I really like the look of those tops but don't remotely suit elasticaed buts at the bottom, the make my bum look huuuuge!

Lexilicious · 16/11/2009 10:49

I am small of frame and D of nork, and I have four Jojo-M-B tops I am about to ebay. Two of these tie-front ones and two strappy vests. The tie-front one is nice to look at but has boob slits too far to the side for me (towards armpits) so you can end up being more conspicuous ferreting your nipple out into the right place in the end. The vest top is quite supportive on its own without bra which was good in the summer (when I had just had the baby and was just sitting around feeding-sleeping-feeding-sleeping) but now it's no advantage over a cheap vest from H&M/primark/asda etc under a t-shirt and arguably more faff as it's yet another clip to undo.

My favourite combo is a long sleeved multicoloured chiffon top from H&M (current stock - looks like a Monet painting) over a coloured vest. Or a more fitted fine cotton crochet t-shirt-shaped top over a vest.

devilsadvocaat · 16/11/2009 12:37

olivo, not sure. will check when i can get it out the w machine. i think it's v flattering though... try it. s only 8 squid!

GoldenSnitch · 16/11/2009 12:56

The tie front top's are the one's I had my eye on! What size are they? I might be able to save you a listing fee??

on a similar vein - has anyone found a nice beastfeeding dress???

alana39 · 17/11/2009 12:01

I hate the tops where there is a hole to pop out of (never right position or size for me but wear bump bands under normal tops to cover middle then just lift up top. And a muslin over the beby's head if need be.

Lexilicious · 17/11/2009 17:42

GS All four are small - I guess that's roughly up to size 12? [if we're buying/selling are we supposed to be on a different bit of MN?] happy to come to an arrangement tho - I believe I have enabled the CAT thingy...

Lexilicious · 17/11/2009 17:46

lal123 - good freudian/typo!
I wear wrap dresses with big silk scarves/pashmina - seems to work ok. May I also at this juncture recommend the Elle Macpherson nursing bras - you pull down most of the cup but it leaves a lacy bit across the top of the boob. v nice.

Thanks Lexi I had a look on the JoJo website and it says small are a size 8-10. No idea what size I'll end up as after baby comes but I was a 12 before I got pregnant so I think they'll probably be too small. I'm not a "popping back" kind of Mummy either it seems, I was huge for ages after DS

The Blooming Marvellous ones look good octopus. Does the white bit lift up or does it have slits in it?

I'm glad I was right about the Mothercare ones. I would have tried them on but I had DS with me and he was getting impatient

It was too much to resist with 20% off so I ordered it - and a t-shirt style top too

MNetters always get 15% just by typing in MNET in the promotion code box but you can't use both together unfortunately.

Only problem now is they're probably going to arrive while I'm away next week!
