Help! Stopped bf at 23m, thought had escaped painful norks...

... but apparently not! I stopped about 9 days ago (how shocking that I can't remember exactly ) and was pleased that my boobs didn't feel full-to-bursting. DS had gone down to just feeding at bedtime and sometimes in the night, with an occasional breakfast feed but not at all during the day, and I had had no problems with leakage or swelling for ages, so thought I had got away with it.

But no! Today one of them has been sore and painful to touch, although doesn't feel hard particularly. There is still some milk there, as I could get a drop to appear, and I was quite surprised at that, tbh.

Anyway, I suppose the point of this post is this:
how long after stopping bf'ing does the pain start/stop?
Is it "normal" for it to have started being painful this long after stopping?
If not, what else could it be, and what can I do about it?

Thanks for any help

I stopped feedind DD1 at 15 months after she had only fed 1 time a day for a few months. Like you I had no obvious swelling but then , eight days later, I got terrible mastitis. If I were you I would take real care of your soreness: drink loads of water, massage it etc. If you feel feverish get three to a doctor.

DD2 is still feeding (11 months) and while I would like to stop in a couple of months I am terrified after last time.

I hope your boob feels better soon.

ooh, thanks Aubergines - so about the same length of time after stopping then. It feels like the other one is starting to get a bit sore too now, will make sure I drink more.

hi, I've just had to stop feeding for medical reasons after 7 mths. I had dropped all of the feeds without too much trouble but since dropping the morning one 8 days ago, have had constant engorgement. I expressed a little bit a couple of times but didn't help so someone on here recommended one of those gel breast pads which you can heat or put in the freezer. It helped a bit....you could also try savoy cabbage leaves

I eventually had to express again last night as I had a suspicious red patch on one breast. It has got a bit better since then but think I am going to have to keep expressing less and less each night to try and relieve it. Just a point, I noticed someone advised you to drink lots, what I have read is to limit fluids I guess to limit amount of milk produced...which is true I don't know. Good luck....I didn't know it was going to be this difficult to give up either.
