Is it normal to have one "good" boob?

I'm not sure if I am normal, or if my nipple has been mangled so much over time that it is a bit wrecked now.

Each baby has had trouble latching on the right side in the first few weeks (I think it is down to a neck issue and the way they are in the womb, they are just never comfortable to start with, even with latch support etc). Plus DS bit the nipple really badly towards the end of his feeding time.

now, when I express I can get oodles out of the left breast in a short space of time, but the right it only seems to come out down the bottom of the nipple (rather than a spray from several places iyswim), so takes a lot longer.

She seems satisfied feeding from that side, and has a good latch now. Is it an expressing thing? Is it common or just down to abused nipples? Is it likely to improve?

(Not a huge issue - just expressing from left and feeding more from right when I need to express as it is quicker)

(Oh DD2 isn't even 4 weeks old, and the latch has only been sorted for a fortnight, so the damage she did could still be healing I guess)

I don'y know, but I have the same thing. My right one is the goodun.I have had mastitis on the left side, plus the nipple is bigger on that side too, I am a freak!

My left was much better than the right. The right side was very mangled and ds never quite got the latch there sorted.

I think it's very common for babies to have a preference. Maybe that can affect the latch although in my case I think there was a slight physical difference about the "difficult" side that exacerbated things. Nothing that I would have noticed in advance but slightly flatter nipple, less flexible skin some how. Lots of oedema in the early weeks.

My left is the star performer, with both dd and ds. At night, I would only feed from the left.

It is normal to have a good boob and in the majority of cases, the good one is the left one. It was for me and I have read (on MN!) that this is the case.

crokky · 13/11/2009 22:24

Oh, and the left boob is usually the favourite regardless of whether the mother is right or left handed (again, according to MN!)

blueshoes · 13/11/2009 22:26

Because the left boob is nearer the heart?

squashimodo · 13/11/2009 23:28

Ha see! I am a freak!

Taramuddle · 13/11/2009 23:38

Yeah most babies end up with a favourite, not sure it has anything to do with damage to nipples though. My left is best btw!

I'm only 2 weeks in but my leftie is deffo my goodie. Oddly ds latches on so much easier/better to the left one but if I express I get more out of the right one, but could be down to supply settling down I spose.

willowstar · 14/11/2009 08:18

well another freak here, my right is my good one and has ended up a lot bigger than my left, despite my best efforts to even them out. I am 6 weeks in and I think the left is improving but definately not up to the standard of the right.

ooh its good to read that I am not alone!

Loving the being over the heart theory - I feel sure that is what it is
