8 week old being very sick

My 8 week old DS has been being very sick after a feed since about 4 weeks old.

I'm breast feeding and he has one aptamil bottle at night, but it makes no difference. Sometimes it will be straight after the feed and others it will be half an hour to an hour afterwards. I know that babies are sick, however, this is ALOT of sick that will just keep coming out of him. Sometimes they are really curdled and look like they must taste disgusting. He gets quite stressed afterwards and often cries. He brings up his wind fine and can burp and then be sick afterwards, but rarely both at the same time. Sometimes he won't be sick straight after the feed, he'll be fine for a while, bring up his wind fine, be quite happy and then all of a sudden you feel his little body lurch and out comes an absolute torrent.

I took him to the dr's and they gave him some infant gaviscon, which worked for 10days and then just stopped working. It also made him constipated which caused him to cry in pain. Would really like some ideas, support... anything really.

He is putting on weight fine and produces lots of wet nappies so I know that there's maybe nothing to worry about but it's just so much sick and he'll do it at night, a few times I've woken up to him gagging on it, which is frightening enough but it was 4 hours after he had fed and it just doesn't seem right. Health Visitor has been useless and just says that that's what babies do but she's not been able to offer any advice about anything I've asked her, so I stopped asking and now she's stopped coming, which is fine by me.

oh SoS
It's worth asking about pyloric stenosis, which I think can cause this although tbh I don't know a lot about it. I remember asking the same about DS when he was about the same age - I think it can cme on at about 6 weeks and is more common in boys. That said, my cousin's DD had it.
Anyway, after all that rambling, a bit of a bump too

StealthPolarBear · 13/11/2009 19:21

That wasn't the case for DS, in case that's not clear
Must be so worrying for you to wake up to him gagging on it

SprinkleofStardust · 13/11/2009 20:10

Thanks Stealth, it is horrible and I sleep on the edge of the bed waking at the slightest thing, I'll have a look into that. Haven't been on here for ages now, hope everyone from Sept thread is doing well and you and your LO? I must get back on it really feel a bit lost now though!!

sprinkle - I think I can sympathise. DD is 4 weeks old and exclusively breastfed. During the day she'll bring upa little of her feed after every feed, and tends to burp well. However in the evenings she seems to find it much harder to bring up her wind, goes very red in the face, pulls up her wee legs and vomits that horrible cottage cheese vomit. She doesn't cry much, and (touchwood)alwaysseemsto be back to normal by bed time - but is not easy! She's gaining weight well (10 oz per week for the last 2 weeks!)so I don't know if its worth bothering hte HV or Dr about?

Could it be a dairy intollerance?? I'm not really sure tough to be honest from what you've said but is it work you going dairy free for a bit and seeing if it helps?

Have you checked out the advice for reflux on the net?
Raise the head of the cot or try using a wedge pillow so ds is not lying flat. My ds wasn't sick too much but did make strange coughing/choking noises when laid flat. For weeks he would only sleep on me if I was sat up or would experience the 'silent reflux' thing. (Reflux without actually being sick).
Aslo, feeding him in a more upright position helped & trying to keep him upright after a feed.
As he got bigger he just seemed to grow out of it, hope your boy does too.

Thank you for all your advice and support, we'll try a few out and I'll let you know how it goes!

Maybe this

DD1 had pyloric stenosis and she was diagnosed at 7 weeks. She was quite a sicky baby to start off with but at 6 weeks she started projectile vomiting after her feeds.

She used to wake up with sick all down her in the cot and if you were holding her it would literally shoot out of her mouth.

After a particularly harrowing weekend of her being constantly sick, I alerted the health visitor who sent me straight to the dr. He diagnosed the problem straight away but sent us to a and e for a second opinion.

Within 12 hours we were at alder hey hospital and she had an operation to correct it.

Dont get me wrong even though it was a minor op she still had to have a general anaesthetic and I can honestly say it was the worst few days of my life but the difference in her was immediate and she has no scar because they did keyhole through her belly button.

If your DS is no better after trying gaviscon and dairy free milk then I would press for a second opinion.

Let us know how you get on.

I've looked into all the possibilities and we think that reflux fits the symptoms best. Obviously it's quite severe but found a good website that's got lots of advice about how to manage it. Thank you all so much, I felt better as soon as I typed that first message, MN really is great!! If the changes don't work at least I know what else it could be and can look into it further
