bottle starts baby screaming

I am half and half feeding my 16 week old son - he has bottles in the day and breast at night. The reason for this is that feeding often starts him off screaming, I presume due to wind as he often has explosive bottom end as a result of the crying and back arching. This screaming got me down when breast feeding, esp in public as I have to stand and comfort him - difficult with boobs hanging out.
He still screams with the bottle sometimes and I just don't know what to do about it. I have tried Infacol, Dentinox, various homeopathic remedies and even chiropractics.
I would appreciate any advice at all - I really thought this would have been done and dusted with by 4 months.

have you asked the doctor for advice? this level of screaming and back arching must be exhausting for both of you

are you expressing at all in the day? i would be concerned at there being enough stimulation to the breasts with hours and hours between feeds, how does he feed at night?

is he gaining weight? weeing and pooing ok?> or is it always explosive?

dfmum · 06/11/2009 13:18

thanks for that. not expressing - never seem to find time! I still have ample supply, in fact that's another reason I gave up in day as he would start off then start crying and I would be making everything soaking wet. He's gaining weight perfectly, weeing fine, as is pooing.
Sometimes the wind is not explosive at all and he is perfectly happy just to produce it! There seems little rhyme or reason. Doctor suggested a lactose free formula, but baby was EXTREMELY disgusted with it - can't say I blame him!!!
He feeds beautifully at night and with at least half of the bottle feeds. As i say, no rhyme or reason!

hmmmmm.. so you are no further on really having seen the doctor? what was his reasoning behind lactose free formula?

are you using the right flow teat for your baby? sometimes if too fast/too slow they can take too much wind in when drinking, hence screaming and pain .

not sure what to suggest really? can you try him on the breast now in the day and see if that makes a difference if he feeds well from the breast at night?

dfmum · 06/11/2009 13:23

that's an idea, will try that. I have tried different teats on bottle. It's so frustrating that he will have a wonderful quiet feed and I think I've cracked it then next feeding poor little thing is in pain again.
Doc's reasoning was to see if he was lactose intolerant. But I feel that if he were he would be in pain all the time. The formula was really really truly disgusting!!
Thanks for your input,

i wonder if you have a bit of an oversupply issue, hence getting everything soaked? and some explosive poo? have you tried breastfeeding cafe or any of the helplines? www.kellymom.com is a great breastfeeding resource as is www.howbreastfeedingworks.com and your local NCT should be able to help too

good luck!

thanks for that, will try.

No advice, but you have my sympathies. My ds is the same, he is 9 weeks.

However my doctors ony advice was that he would grow out of it. I have given up breastfeeding as it was too stressful.

I am at my wits end.

I have a similar problem but dd has reflux. It's better now that she is 16 weeks, so I hope in time things will improve for you as well.

Thank you Ladylush and Roslily - sorry about late reply! Glad Ladylush your dd better, think my ds improving too, but perhaps I'm just resigned to it! Roslily, don't despair, it will get better - I just am good now at walking about mid-feed to calm him, and a dummy really helps too, then I can put him back on breast or bottle. Tiring tho. Would love to just have calm feed times like in the books!
