Tongue Tie

This isn't really about feeding but I know that it gets discussed about a lot in here.

DS1 is 2.6yo and DS2 is 10mo. My MIL has had them 2 days this week and she mentioned that she thinks that they both have tongue tie.

I've had a look and they both seem to have short bits of skin that connect the tongue to the bottom of their mouths.

I'm planning to see the HV next week about DS2's sleeping so will ask her then but just wanted to know more about it and what to look for.

first of all, dont panic!

My ds had one and it prevented sucessfull breastfeeding although we trooped on for many months, it was only discovered when at 8mnths he thought poking his tongue out was funny and it 'forked' like a snake, after several days of him doing this there was a little blood and it appeared hed sorted it!

No advice but thats how we noticed x x x

Hi there - my DD2 had this, and after reading about it here we got it 'snipped' (non technical term) at about 6 weeks, just as feeding was a bit iffy. The consultant said that most cases sort themselves out as above, and its very unusual for it to cause any problems later on with solid feeding or speech development. At the age your kids are, any operation to remove the tie would need to be done under general anaesthetic, so not for the fainthearted, whereas if done when they are tiny, only needs a local (or sometimes, its done with just a bit of sugar water). So, if its not causing any feeding/speech development problems, then I wouldn't fret
