How much milk does your 2 year old drink a day???

Hi there, just wanting a rough idea of how much milk peoples 2 year olds drink in a day on average.

I started another thread about my ds's complex feeding issues.

The conclusion was that I am now experimenting for a few weeks with him drinking normal whole milk (instead of the high cal stuff I believe supresses his appetite).

If the 'experiment' goes really well I might try him on a little less milk each day. He has 16oz a day at the moment and will turn 2 on 30th oct.

Hmm having looked at the thread I think my sums must have gone a bit wrong somewhere!

It's about a pint a day, anyway.

Dalrymps · 06/10/2009 14:56

Lol sardine, I get what you mean

I just looked at this thread because my DS is nearly 3, and I think drinks too much milk in the morning. He has between 8 and 9 oz's when he first wakes up and another 8 to 9oz's in the evening, which I guess is about even with what your 2yo's are drinking, so actually probably is OK.

Also, he has it in an avent bottle, but with one of those spouts attached, not a teat, as he drinks it in bed normally, although at night time, that's changing due to teeth cleaning.

Does having a spouted cup actually matter?

The only reason I was wondering if it was too much, is that he never really eats breakfast, maybe a fruit pouch or yoghurt if I persist, but he's always refused cereal and only eats toast if absolutely desperate.

Eats every other meal really well, and munches very happily on fruit and veg - incl. his new habit for raw green beans strange child !

AddictedtoCrunchies · 06/10/2009 15:16

DS is 20 months and has 7-9oz in the morning when he wakes and 8-13oz at night before bed. All out of a bottle. The rest of the time he drinks water or weak squash out of a Tommy Tippee cup.

He also has breakfast (2 weetabix), snack (fruit or a biscuit), lunch (cooked), snack (as before), tea (cooked) and on nursery days, will have another snack when we have tea.

So the milk doesn't suppress his appetite.

Interesting, so some are great milk drinkers and eaters!

sparkly - Sounds like he's healthy and hsppy to me with a good varied diet. Up to you about the milk, wouldn't say it's s major issue..

DD is nearly 22 months. She won't drink cow's milk at all, and never has.
She has a small amount of milk on her cereal in the morning, usually one yoghurt and one slice of cheese per day, one short (10-15 minute) breastfeed before bed.
She used to be a terrible eater, but in the last 4-5 months she has come on in leaps and bounds.

Sparklytwinkletoes · 06/10/2009 15:50

Thanks for replying Dalrymps, t'was rude of me to crash your thread... (Am sat at home waiting for DC2 to arrive, EDD = Today

It seems that the amount of milk a child drinks doesn't necessarily affect their appetite...so I'd do what you're telling me to carry on doing...trusting your own instincts.

I keep writing things to say, but then deleting them coz I'm worried about 'encouraging' you to do something that some nutritional expert would come along and slate me for, feeding is such a tricky area, no matter what age the kids are it seems.

Sorry I can't help and don't have anything useful to say.

Dalrymps · 06/10/2009 16:07

tabitha - Glad your dd's eating has got better

Sparkly - I know, I get what you're saying, it's hard to judge someone elses situation when you can only compare it to your own.

I'm going to carry on with the 16oz for now till I can see how his weight is on that then i'll look at it again. I am aware it's a delicate balance so will just have to watch him closely. My instincts do tell me that maybe the high cal milk is not the right thing for him but we'll see...

dalrymps, I don;t know the details so this could be all wrong, but your posts make me think of a friend of mine who had a baby years ago. It was small inside her, small on birth, the midwives and NH were on at her all the time about how small it was and she had to feed it up.

But it had a teeny appetite. She spent her days desperately trying to work butter and cheese into other foods for the baby to eat when weaning and was in a right state the whole time as the child gradually dropped off the bottom of the centiles.

Needless to say the baby is now 12, still small of stature (short like her mum and slim like her dad), still with a small appetite, loves sports, very fit, always chasing around, bright as a button. Her mum does complain of a certain amount of stroppness - but she is a 12 yo girl

I don't know if this relates to your situation at all, but thought it was worth a go

SardineQueen · 06/10/2009 16:28

NH = HV BTW

Dalrymps · 06/10/2009 16:47

Interesting sardine, ds too was small inside, I had to have growth scans. My instincts say he is supposed to be reasonably small anyway...

Sparkly - Forgot to say, very exciting it's your edd today!!! Good luck, hope baby doesn't keep you waiting too long. Wish mine was due, have to wait till march!

Dalrymps - where you on the wagon ttc thread? I remember your name from somewhere I'm sure - although I've namechanged so that makes things tricky... Congrats on BFP it seems!

alwayslookingforanswers · 07/10/2009 09:04

DS3 is 2.4 and will often have 3 x 8oz bottles a day still.

I did try cutting them out to increase his food intake.........the only difference I found was that I had a grouchy boy, his food intake didn't increase at all lol.

Sparkly - Yes I was! Thanks for the congrats

alwayslooking - Ah maybe he just really likes his milk for now then...

thesecond - Ds is very 'sensitive' to being filled upto quick, anything seems to affect his appetite, maybe some lo's are just like this? Ds also weighs about the same as your dd

My daughter is 16 months old and was breastfed until about a week ago when she stopped by herself (she wasn't taking much anyway). I was expressing at work whilst she was at nursery (from 10 months), for 3 days, for a while and then decided to give her cow's milk from around 1. She has never really taken that much milk, I think she has 4 or 6oz throughout the day at nursery and we don't give her any at home really as she doesn't seem bothered. If I'm having a cup of tea out and about she might ask for some milk from the jug they give you, but I think thats more of a novelty than anything else. She gets calcium from other foods and it hasn't seemed to impede her growth- she has always been small (in height & weight) so I have learnt not to pay too much attention to the charts and only get her weighed every few months as she is healthy so that's all that matters. Plus she has a healthy apetite!
