Starting solids/cutting down breast feeding

I've started solids with my six month old, and assumed I should start cutting down the breast feeds right away, she's been exclusively breast fed up till now. However, having read through some posts on this site there seems to be lots of people who still breast feed all day (and night!) and offer solids too. I've really enjoyed breast feeding. Is it best to offer solids, then offer a breast feed when she's done? And when should I cut down the breast feeding - and how should I do it? Asked my health visitor but she wasn't much good - just said drop the lunch time feed.

I don't think the idea initially is to cut down as the amount of solids they eat is so little. However at 6 months, once weaning is well established, you could possibly try offering after a meal or leave it an hour or two so that you alternate solid and milk feeds. It really depends what suits you and your baby best and you may need to experiment a little.

I'm sure there are other approaches too.

Wait until your baby is esrablished on solids before cutting out breastfeeds. Everybody does it in different ways. I did it differently with all my 4 babies.
I always offerred the breast after I had given the solid food. Once they were on 3 meals a day, I offerred juice instead ( many people will say do not give juice, but I did. None of mine liked water on it's own). With my first ds I religiously dropped feeds, starting with the lunch time one, spacing them out a few weeks apart. He stopped feeding at 11 months.
With my youngest, I again started dropping feeds when she was on 3 meals a day. However, I was very flexible with her. If she had juice with her lunch but wanted a breastfeed 30mins later she got it. She stopped when she was 15 months old. I would have fed her longer but she refused it.
So really there is no 'right way' to do it. Solids should only be small amounts initially/ I classed a full meal as savoury and sweet at each meal. Just go slowly. HTH.
