Which electric breast pump should I buy?

Hi all,

DC#2 is due in a few weeks and I want to purchase an electric breast pump. I used a manual one with DD and found this useful but would rather make the job easier for myself this time.

Any recommendations?

I've got a Medela Swing and I'm very pleased with it. No complaints at all really.

They are quite pricey but if you're lucky you might find a second hand one. Y

You can replacement tubing, vales, new breastsheilds etc very cheaply.

I had a double pump - medela pump in style advanced. It was marvelous and gentle and quick. I could adjust the settings as I pleased and they have a "let down" mode so it simulates baby's sucking pretty closely. I was very happy with it. After trying an Avent one that was awful and HURT so much!!

Nork That's a very helpful chart - thanks. I think I'm leaning towards the Swing/Mini Electric with reasons for expressing will be missed feed/evening out.
Star I've looked at the double pump. It's great to have the option to do both sides at once but it looks so industrial. Was it tricky to hold both sides at the same time as using the controls?

I really like the 2 phase system that the swing has, that's what made me choose it over the mini electric.

The medela one is less industrial than the others It's easy to use both at the same time and it means you can express both breasts at one time - and it only takes 10-15 minutes TOTAL. A godsend. And you can use just one at a time if you want, too. I liked the pump in style advance because it comes inside of a black backpack which is easily carried anywhere and so easy to use and store everything, too, including expressed milk (includes cool pack and bag for putting bottles of milk inside).

I've got the Medela Mini.... it's quite loud, but then it's a few years old and I think the newer versions are much quieter.

I have the Ameda Lactaline which I like very much, it is especially good for taking to work and using in the car etc, comes in a neat little backpack and works well for me.

Thanks all. I'm settled on purchasing a Medela and am very tempted by the Swing. May try and find an online discount voucher to reduce the cost.

I've used the mini electric and swing. The swing is by far the better pump and definitely worth the extra cash.

I got a lightly used Medela Swing off ebay for £50, and have seen them go for cheaper. Been using it for two weeks now and find it quite good. The breastfeeding specialist midwife said it was pretty much the best one because of the 'stimulation phase' it goes through when you first start it up.

Second hand really is fine, the pump it's self doesn't come into contact with the milk at all. All the bit's that do can be replaced really cheaply.
