Latching problems

My beautiful dd is 6 days old and most of the time breast feeds well but sometimes she refuses to latch, she seems ravenous and it feels likes she's attaching ok but after a minute she pulls back, it makes me feel like I'm doing something wrong??? Also, is it too early to introduce a couple of expressed bottles a day ( I'm going to use tommee teepee bottles as they are supposed to be easier when your bf)

Hi niahm, congratulations! Hopefully someone with more experience will come along in a bit but I can sympathise as my dd had problems with latching on in the early days and I worried myself sick about it.

It definately doesn't sound as though you're doing anything wrong.

Is it wind? My dd used to do that when she needed burping. We used infacol in the end which was very useful. My dd also used to pull away when my milk let down, I think it was a bit too fast when she was tiny and would make her cough. It settled over time.

Does he cry or fuss when she pulls back? If she's happy she might have just wanted a little drink or comfort?

I'd say its far too early to introduce even one bottle a day nevermind a couple - especially if your dd has latch problems (which might not be the case). Is there any reason you want/need to give bottles right now?

Thanks for the response, yeah my dd is getting very frustrated when she can't latch on properly, which of course only adds to the problem. Hopefully lunch will go better than breakfast!!!

Niamh (great name by the way!!), my DD2 is coming up to four weeks and I've been having this problem too. I've found that she does this more in the evenings. I also second the Infacol advice. What I find helps is if I switch breasts. It's almost like she gets frustrated on one side as maybe the flow has slowed down, she is then happy on the other side. HTH
