Problem with right breast

Hi, I have read most of the other threads in this topic but didn't find one that was quite fits my scenario. For a couple of days now ds has not been keen on the right breast. It is not sore and milk comes out when I squeeze it. He tries to suck and then averts his face repeatedly until I give up and put him on the LHS. Obviously this cannot continue but I don't know how to change it - any ideas on what it might be - can it be blocked if some milk comes out?

My ds did this when I was breast feeding, I asked the HV about it and she said it could be that he prefers his head turned the other way, so when you hold him to that one, don't hold him across your chest as you normally would, hold him as if he was on your left and support his wieght with a pillow.
So, although you don't get the cuddle you normally would you he feeds. It worked for me anyway, and after a few days I tired him back the other way and he seemed fine.

Hope this makes sense to you!

I had a friend with this problem last year. We tried everything to get her ds to suck from her left breast. We even went to the extreme of letting him suck on MY left breast. Which he did quite happily despite the fact that my milk had dried up months before!

I know it's no help. But you're not alone.

My ds2 prefers my left and I think it is because I had a blocked duct on that side so fed more regularly and used to top him up on the Right as a result he does not seem keen to start on that one - odd isn't it?!

Babies are fuuny wee things. Have you tried starting him on the right then slipping him across to the left mid feed? Same as Gini's suggestion really. I have a friend who has fed from one side only for over a year. She certainly does have 2 different sized boobs at the moment but they will even up in the end

DS (& I)definitely had a huge problem with my right boob. Never really solved it, just sort of kept offering both - he'd only ever go for the right one when the left one sort of 'ran out' though! I looked fairly lop-sided a lot of the time.

Agree with Gini about finding a different way to hold him on the right side. You can also do the 'rugby tackle' hold which is basically under your armpit like a rugby ball, I found that DD loved that position anyway. Or how about lying down?? that often takes some of the strain off the way they hold their heads.

Bron you did make me laugh - I hope you are able to be ambi-boob-strous this time - in my experence no two kids feed the same so it is quite likely that you will be.

I tried all the tips suggested and after persevering for a few days he is taking more from the right breast again. It's good to hear that taking more from one side doesn't cause long term damage or lopsidedness (my left is slightly bigger naturally anyway and do not really fancy ending up with a mountain and a molehill).

PS: those of you that feed lying down - you are probably better at it than I was but beware of getting back problems - I fed ds during the night like this due to being so knackered but really hurt my back from getting into awkward positions. I have just sorted it out with the osteopath and will not be doing it again (not for a while anyway.....) Must learn how to do smiley faces.
