I am visiting family in London atm and went to the local Turkish supermarket today. Was pretty to see the baby foods aisle, complete with only Nestle baby foods (the sort that come powdered in a tin, Cerelac iirc) and a whole shelf of Nido powdered milk. Not formula, milk powder. Exactly like this.

They didn't actually have any proper formula on the shelf either btw, just those cereally 'foods' and this milk powder.

I know this sort of thing goes on and I've read the Politics of BF, and am a member of Baby Milk Action. Makes me hopping mad, it does. Have taken a picture and will be emailing Mike Brady, Nestle, and local Trading Standards.

Oh, yes, I don't think for a second that Nido, or Marvel, should not be sold in shops. It's just that displaying it with the infant formula (as I have seen) implies that people expect to find it there.

It's not unreasonable to suppose that a few mothers who have recently come to the UK do in fact feed their babies with Nido (or Marvel for that matter). Presumably a HV or similar will pick it up?

I don't know how to find out short of hanging round the display and asking people.

I'll upload the photo in a bit.

Posting on this older thread which I was referred to because I posted a similar question 2 years later.

I was shocked at the inflation on the formula. Nido is less than half the price of the "proper" formula milks. When I saw the mention of Turkish shops, I was wondering if it was my area, where most shops are Turkish (unless Polish).

It was an area in east London beginning with W - anywhere close, or is this a more widespread issue?

elkiedee · 28/07/2011 14:29

You mentioned Walthamstow already, Tottenham's between there and Wood Green which I might have otherwise guessed from your last post! I imagine it's a common issue across a lot of London, lots of areas with lots of quite poor people - and I think British born mums may be at as much risk of buying this as ones from other countries.
