have been breastfeeding dd4 for 9months rther successfully with no major issues.

but it has been agffecting her negatively. she has rashes, colicy, very loose stools, eczema etc. turns out she is allergic to m,ilk, egg and [peanut. i have been trying to get hold of the hospital dietican to sort out what i should be eating, avoiding and same for dd4. but cant get hold of them at all.

soph is mucousy and rattling as she breathes again. its not wheezing, so not an emergency, just the way she is when things get too much for her.

i feel i have been left holding a baby with a bottle of piriton in one hand, a script for formula in the other, and no idea of which way to turn.

i feel like i should be breastfeeding her, but feel guilty everytime she has a reaction after feeding. but i feel awful thinking about giving her formula.

if I remember rightly my friend got no real help from the NHS (lots of tests but no answers) - she worked most of it out herself.

I think she just cut out dairy until she weaned at about 14 months. As someone else said - calcium you can get from veg (I think brocoli is good). I could happily live without milk and yoghurt - and butter I would miss but would cope with something like flora.

Give it a go - it can't make things worse and may well get you through the breast feeding stage.

Misdee, if you can face eliminating dairy, eggs and peanut from your diet then breastfeeding is still the best for your little one. All the other benefits to breastfeeding are still there, and are not in the formula. And sadly, dieticians are not always well informed about breastfeeding and the benefits - particularily in a child with allergies. The jury is still out on whether breastfeeding offers protection against allergies, but it seems to be established that it is invaluable in aiding healing in the stomach and gut where inflammation has occurred. The Human Milk Bank in Northern Ireland gets frequent requests for breastmilk for patients (not just babies) with stomach and gut issues.

misdee hope that you have found a solution wish that i can help more, but you have lots of help here from others who know quite a bit

OurLadyOfPerpetualSupper · 13/08/2009 14:17

Is the problem that you like dairy etc too much to give it up?
You will find if you give it a go that you actually feel better in terms of energy and general 'wellness.'
Tea and coffee are disgusting with any milk other than cow's, so you'll find either you drink them black or give them up all together.
I know what I'd do, faced with a choice between a screaming baby or a different diet for me.
You don't need a dietician, you can easily make the switch yourself. You'll have to be vigilant with labels for the first few shops but it becomes second nature.
This can be done and it's got to be worth trying, surely.

misdee · 13/08/2009 20:17

pretty much it ourlady.

been thinking today and i guess there is loads i can have, in opposed to what i cant.

cutting out milk in tea will be the hard thing for me.

but i dont mind black coffee. so will switch to that.

Sorry to be a kill joy but you may want to switch to decaff. I know that my DS is sensitive to it as well.
Once you get used to it all then life isnt too bad. You may find that once you cut out the main dairy source then a little milk in your tea 2/3 times a day doesnt have any ill effect. Each baby is different.

misdee · 13/08/2009 20:39

Its already decaff i dont usually drink coffee, i buy it for when my dad pops round.

nutrimegen is supposed to taste horrible - even to a baby, as your dd is quite old now that is probably why she is screaming when offered it - how about mixing it with EBM? I know she will still be getting reactions but i would guess they would be less severe.

My friend has a DD with a similar story to yours & she has been told by her (nhs) dietician to follow a diary, egg & nut free diet herself.

ronshar · 13/08/2009 21:16

Yes it is foul but the tins I picked up last week state a new improved flavour!! Still has an odd flavour mind you. But then I think all formula tastes like crap

OurLadyOfPerpetualSupper · 13/08/2009 22:25

Sorry I think I came across as short in my earlier post. Just remembered a really nice soft cheese spread from health food shops - tastes just like Philadelphia - if you can have soy.

mawbroon · 13/08/2009 22:30

Do you know that name of it? I have tried ds on various cheese substitutes and all the ones we have tried so far are pretty rank...

misdee · 13/08/2009 22:40

no not short, i was typing whilst feeding soph.

she is so bunged up all the time, i really need to get this sorted out.

Hi Misdee,
Going through similar with Will - he is allergic to cows milk, egg, peanut, soya, wheat cod and something else cashew nuts I think! No- walnuts!
It is really hard - totally empathise. I am still bf-ing, was told to cut out dairy etc but haven't quite managed to but he is not reacting the same way as Sophie.
Asda do a bread that he can have in their free from range - i think they use apple juice instead of egg and it's wheat free and we use vitalite (didn't know about the lactic acid - he has not reacted so far!) I do jacket potato with a meat and a veg for lunch then roast dinner for tea and it's a huge pita!
Completely understand your frustration at lack of dietician appointment. Very lucky in that we have one in September - will share any info but I do hope you get one soon.

OurLadyOfPerpetualSupper · 13/08/2009 23:27

The soft cheese is called Tofutti.

mawbroon · 16/08/2009 14:50

Ah, Toffutti. I have bought the slices (wasn't keen, and ds was even less so!!) but haven't seen a spread. Will keep a look out for it, thanks.

How are you doing misdee?

treedelivery · 16/08/2009 15:01

Misdee! I had no idea you were having such a time of it

We had our official dairy intolerant diagnosis on Tursday.

Is she ok with gluten?

If she is bunged up stay clear of bannana and potato and rice [her not you]. I made a puree of dried prunes simmered in water. Its like molasses. DD2 liked it and was 'mobile' in a day!

Where you at now?
