Come and tell me what to think about the new Angeline Jolie breastfeeding statue!

Here.

I don't know how I feel about it - on the one hand YAY breastfeeding is celebrated. On the other hand, I can't help but feel that a nekkid Angeline Jolie is always going to be sexualised, and gives the wrong message about breastfeeding.

What do we think?

Although... she may have stumbled sleepily out of the bath, plonked herself on the bathroom floor, exhausted, Brad handed her the two hungry infants and she latched them on then slumped forward, half asleep. That is more like reality

GirlsAreLoud · 11/08/2009 22:28

I remember reading an interview with her pre the twins in which she said she stopped breastfeeding Shiloh at 3 months because she found it hard to sit still.

So I guess I've always found it a bit weird that she's sometimes held up as some kind of b/fing champion.

C'mon, it's something that subtly raises the profile of breastfeeding. Yes, the Positioning and Attachment doesn't look brilliant, and of course it is a bit "airbrushed", but it is a celebrity (therefore getting much more press/media interest than an anonymous person) breastfeeding ("angelina jolie does it, so must be pretty cool"). This is pretty superficial, and not very relevant to mothers making their infant feeding choices, but it does push breastfeeding a notch towards normal in terms of our culture, and in particular our media which is pretty anti-bf at the end of the day.

The guy who did this sculpture is the same one who did the one of Britney giving birth on a bear skin rug (didn't she have c-sections for both her boys?). I doubt if either woman had anything to do with it. It's just an "artist" trying to gain exposure by using famous faces.

sockmonkey · 12/08/2009 08:50

More about him here

sabire · 12/08/2009 09:14

He also did a sculpture of 'Suri Cruise's first bowel movement', which shows what looks like a fully formed adult turd, modelled in gold, rather than a puddle of meconium.

Bloody idiot.

MamaLazarou · 12/08/2009 09:14

I like it: her skin looks awful.

TAFKAtheUrbanDryad · 12/08/2009 09:27

See, Eirlys, my problem with it is that it shows an unrealistic picture of breastfeeding - especially twins, where Angie is flat tummied and calm and serene 3 hours after giving birth in an uncomfortable and inaccurate position, which would be virtually impossible to get into, and maintain, and would kill your back if you tried to breastfeed like it for any length of time!

It smacks of this sculptor using breastfeeding as a shock factor, rather than using the celebrity, which seems wrong to me. If he wanted to sculpt Angelina Jolie then he should have just sculpted her, not use breastfeeding as an excuse to sculpt her nekkid!

did he really sabire? What a prat. According to that wiki article he also did a sculpture of Britney giving birth on her hands and knees. She actually had a c section.

kikid · 12/08/2009 10:01

I like it, anything to raise/normalise bf, is positive imo.

Prosecco · 12/08/2009 10:11

Think it is a bit of an invasion of privacy. It was modelled on a picture Brad took of her breastfeeding.(She was clothed and awake in it if I recall). Not sure she agreed for it to be modelled on her which is why it does not have her name anywhere in the title. Agree it would have been better if a) it was of an anonymous woman and b) the babies didn't look suspended form her armpits

sockmonkey · 12/08/2009 10:50

I can sexualize anything, it's my ace in the hole.

Says it all really.

Eirlys · 12/08/2009 14:46

ok, I'm leaning away from the artist a bit more after reading about him and his other works.

However, I think kikid has put it really succintly.
The shock value of a nekkid celebrity has got a picture of a woman breastfeeding into the conciousness of millions of people, not just pregnant women/mums; it doesn't matter that these people are seeing bad p&a, no-one's going to say "ooh you shouldn't be holding them like that, angelina does it differently" ( at the thought) but it might hopefully open up some debate on breastfeeding outside of the women who have an interest in it, and hopefully it will plant the seeds of thought in some people's minds that breasts can be used to feed babies and not just look to good in skimpy outfits.

Plus "artistses" have always been given license to present things in more attractive light. I am NOT comparing Angelina Jolie to the Virgin Mary, but the Virgin Mary does not look like she has just travelled hundreds of miles on camel then given birth in a shed in all of her bf portraits.

StealthPolarBear · 12/08/2009 15:01

Well I quite like it! I don't think it's too gratuitous - although maybe my perception of naked boobs isn't quite what it should be! She also looks half asleep and not at her best, which is pretty realistic! I too would feed naked, I do tend to throw my dressing gown on in the middle of the night but that's for the cold, if it was a red hot night I wouldn't bother. And of course I look exactly like Angelina!
(please could anyone who has met me refrain from commenting. Thanks)

StealthPolarBear · 12/08/2009 15:02

pmsl at the Virgin Mary looking knackered and with a sore back and straw in her hair!

StealthPolarBear · 12/08/2009 15:03

and donkey dung smeared down the side of her face. Glowering at Joseph because he agreed to book the room but left it too late.

TAFKAtheUrbanDryad · 14/08/2009 19:47

@SPB. I can just see it now. Not sure the Catholic church would endorse it though!!

I do like that she has bags under her eyes though...apart from that, totally ridicuous....
