Infant feeding

Shes so unsettled in the day

My 14wk dd is so unsettled in the day. Shes sleeps through the night, last night 1945 to 0700. She has 7oz sma white feeds won't take anymore than that. Shes plays for a while then I put her down to sleep. At the most she sleeps for about 30 mins sometimes as short as 10 mins. She wakes up screaming the place down and is then unsettled screaming and wanting to be picked up until I feed her again. Do you think I should start weaning her?

Lolly, that seems very young to wean. Has she always been on the white SMA? It can be difficult to digest for some babies.

yes she has been since very young. she doesn't appear to be in any pain she just seems hungry. If i give her a bottle early she messes about with it.

Just give her more milk, lolly - 14 weeks is far too early for anything else.

If she is messign about with the bottle, is it possible that she just wants attention or to suck rather than to feed? Have you tried a dummy?

She won't have anymore than 7oz at a feed. I know its too young to wean her but I am getting frustrated, I should be able to have a happy settled child, my first baby ate, played, slept like a dream. I hate to hear her crying all the time

Yes tried a dummy just spits it out. I give her plenty of attention cos I can't stand the crying!

Lolly, might she be teething? My ds3 is and he's about the same age.

have a look at this thread - it may give you some ideas or at least make you realise you are not alone

Lolly, give her extra feeds - 7 oz may be all she can take at any one time, but she can have more feeds.

But you're saying she's crying and unsettled and sometimes screaming....I don't understand why you don't feed her then. Sorry if I am missing something

Because I would be constantly feeding her!!

It sounds like it's just a phase she's going through. I would just offer here the botle when she seems unsettled and if she refuses it play with her until she calms down. Have you got a bouncy chair or a play gym she goes on in the day?

How often is she napping? Could this be related to tiredness?

This sounds very similar to my 14 wk dd. We realised she just always needs to have a good crying fit before she will go to sleep. At first I would pick her up everytime she started but then realised she was getting overtired. I now let her cry for a while to let her get it out of her system and then she conks out. How long do you let her cry before going to her? I realise it sounds cruel to leave them but in dd's case it does work. Sometimes I have to leave her for up to 15mins when I know she has just fed, had her nappy changed etc. Something that also worked with dd (when I knew she wasn't tired) was just letting her lie on a towel without a nappy on. She will happily loll about half naked for at least 20 mins before getting fed up.

Hope this helps.

Lolly...again I am not getting it You have a baby who is unsettled, and you are considering the huge hassle of starting solids (long before it would be a healthy decision) but you want to avoid giving her more formula....she may well only need an extra feed or two, and her crying may be 'asking' you to feed her. Just do it

Thanks bunjies I think I may be getting into the unfair realm of comparing her to my other daughter who was very set in a feed, play, sleep for a good 2 hrs am and pm routine. I know that I am feeding her enough and on demand its just the ear bleeding crying I find hard to deal with. I will start writing a diary of her activites to see what works and what doesn't.

Does she refuse to feed when you offer her a feed whenever she cries?

it sounds like your lo is unsettled with tiredness as her naps are very very short. Have you tried extending the naps? You could use pick up/put down. When your lo cries, pick her up to calm her down and put her back down - repeat as needed until you lo goes back to sleep. I dont think food is the issue, I think it is overtiredness.

Your right i don't think food is the issue and have tried extending her naps. Thanks for all your comments, I know I will get there eventually.
