Hiya

Just a quick question as I have had many different types info on this. We live in sussex which has a really hard water area, we have a brita filter jug, but I have been unsure on whether to use the filter water when boiling the kettle for his feeds? So I haven't been, but we get so much build up in the kettle, it's quite disgusting, and however much we clean the kettle it comes back as soon as poss. Can we use filtered water to do his feeds? Advice please!!

Thanks

You can use filtered, but not mineral water. If you wish. having said - limescale is not actually harmful, it's unsightly and makes the tea taste horrid but it doesn't make you ill!

Ahhh thank you very much for clearing that up, it's tough to know what to do, as I want to make sure he gets the minerals that we get in our tap water, but I also think that the sediment that is at the bottom of his bottle makes me think about whether it effect the taste of his formula?? who knows but I guess I can give the filtered a try, after I have truley scrubbed out our kettle!!!!

Thanks again!

Filtered is fine, mineral water or domestically salt-softened water systems are not. If you want to get (and keep) your kettle tip top them plain old brown vinegar is a miracle substance. We live in a very hard water area too and once a month I use a cup full of vinegar (sainbury's 14p a bottle stuff) - boil it in the kettle before you go to be, let sit overnight, empty and then boil through some clean water twice over to take away any residue - it's fab!

I was told by Aptamil phoneline lady that it is best not to use filtered, because there may be a build up of bacteria in the filter (although why the boiling wouldn't kill it I'm not sure?)

We used to love in a very hard water area, and I ended up descaling the kettle weekly! I used to use white vinegar, mixed with a bit of water and boiled up.

i always used filtered when DD had bottles, the kettle is manky if we use direct tap water, plus we could boil a bit extra and have a drinkable cup of tea at the same time

wow you peeps, thank you soooo much for the advice and handy tips!! I feel honoured that people want to pass on their advice

I agree that the boiling of the kettle would kill off any bacteria, plus we use SMA anyway!! hee hee!!

I'm new to this website and came over this topic which is really interesting to hear as i've been speaking with some other mothers at school about whether its right or good to use filtered water for feeds. I know now that it actually much better, something to do with the the levels and types of contaminants in the water that babies can't handle at an early age.

I started using a Brita jug but found that we kept forgetting to use and it turned out quite expensive in comparison to alternative under-sink options as you have to keep the filter in water or regenerate it or something. Anyway, sorry to keep going on but i found some great stuff from a website called Clear-Tech who really seem to know their stuff, have a great range and good value.

I dont normally recommend websites but its worth a look. Thanks.

Smile :)
