Going self catering in UK. Am exclusively bf dd who is 20 weeks. Don't mind not storing for a week but still want to express so I can give dd ebm in bottle to get her used to bottles (back to work in 2 weeks). Also trying to keep up good supply so expressing useful for that.

So basically I want to use the breast pump & store ebm in the fridge for a few hours - poss overnight. Can I get away with pouring boiling water over the pump/bottles before using them or do I need to invesigate those cold water sterilising tablet things?
Never used them -any advice? Just don't want to take the steam steriliser - too bulky.
What would you do?

does the place your staying have a dishwasher, if so wahs all the bits in that, as it gets up to 60o its hot enought to sterillse. or pour a boiling hot kettle over all the stuff just before your use it.

TrophyWife · 20/05/2005 09:33

that should be "if so wash"......

Why not take a microwave steriliser? Assuming of course the accommodation has a microwave! If you don't have one already they are only about a tenner. HTH

Get the Tommee Tippee or Mothercare travel cold water sterilising bags. They come with a premeasured tablet, you fill up with water to a mark, hang over shower or bath tap and soak stuff for an hour. The solution lasts 24hrs then pour away (or use to wipe over the kitchen!) and start again. They are big enough for several bottles and a pump.

There is a microwave in the cottage. How do I use it to sterilise? Do I need anything else?

Sorry to be thick about it - just don't have a microwave at home so bit clueless about them.

sterilising tablets are pretty straightforward (and easy to pack!). I'm taking them on holiday.

tarantula · 20/05/2005 09:40

boil in a saucepan for 5 mins.

charleepeters · 20/05/2005 09:40

if you get a microwave steriliser you just put water in the bottom pop the bottles and rest of bits into it then microwave for about 8-10 mins, or you can but some steralising tablets and steralise your stuff in a clean sink with boiled water.

acnebride · 20/05/2005 09:41

Just tablets in the washing up bowl are fine (superdrug and boots do them i think) but the bags certainly sound easier.

Microwave bags £4.99 for 3

They are reuasable too - sure they can be used quite a few times each. Can't remember exactly how you do it - instructions on side. Think you add a drop of water, put your bottles in and then they go in the microwave. After that you take it out and leave them inside the bag for a while - suppose it is steaming them.

Yu may have to buy a cheap microwave steriliser. Fill water up to a mark, put stuff in on rack and zap for 8 -10 minutes (depends on model), elave for a couple of minutes to coll then use. some may not be big enough to take a pump so you'll need ot check and the reuseable Lindam bags would also probably be too small (otherwise also recomemnd them). As to bulk to travel - you could always use it to hold the pump and stuff on the way.

Toothache · 20/05/2005 09:45

Our Avent Microwave sterliser only takes 5 minutes. We used a steam steriliser for ds..... but when dd came along we got the micro steriliser as a gift.... I'm reformed now!

aloha · 20/05/2005 09:58

You could just put everything in a saucepan of boiling water for ten minutes. That seems the simplest solution to me. Or in the dishwasher if you have one. Same thing really.

smellymelly · 20/05/2005 10:28

The microwave bags are great... You put in 70ml of cold water and they can just take 2 bottles and the bits and a couple of dummies, then put in the microwave on full power for 3 mins.

So easy and they say you can re-use them 20 times each, we must have used ours about 30 times so far!!

Magscat · 20/05/2005 10:36

Thanks everyone. Obviously it's all much mmore simple than I thought - just need to choose which method now but all look easy enough.

I'm taking an ice cream tub and cold water sterilising tablets, they cost pennies so much cheaper too.

Pingpong · 18/02/2010 12:50

I agree with LJ29 ice cream tub and milton tablets are very, very easy and cheap solution.
I was lent a steam sterliser which I found very bulky as I was only sterlising one bottle and one pump each day.
I gave it back and bought a travel microwave steriliser from Tesco (in store). I mostly used it for cold water sterilisation but could also use it in the micro. It wasn't dear at all and took up very little counter space.
When on holiday though I just packed some milton tablets and used an ice cream tub. Travelling with milton liquid can be dangerous!!!!
Tesco have a Mother and Baby promotion on right now so you may well find it reduced in price - I've just looked I can't see it online right now.
