difference between tongue tie and tight labial frenulum

Is there one?

If a baby won't latch on easily, falls off, hardly feeds at all, makes clicking sonds when she does, but tongue isn't heart shaped, could it still be tongue tie?

Or could it be a tight labial frenulum, or are these the same thing?

Tongue tie is a bit of skin attaching the tongue to the floor of the baby's mouth. A labial frenulum is between the upper lip and the gum (in the middle where the top teeth will be). Can you see or feel even a small flap under the baby's tongue? Occasionally a tongue tie is under some other tissue, but you would be able to feel it.

What about the shape of the roof of her mouth? Has anyone checked to see if she has a high-arched or even bubble palatte?

How old is she? Is she gaining weight? Pooing and weeing? What about you -how are your nipples?

Sounds like you would benefit from speaking to or seeing in person a bf expert. Have you tried the national helplines?

Also, do you feel you have plenty of milk? Sometimes babies slide off because the flow is fast and it's overwhelming them, clicking sounds can be them deliberately releasing suction to control a fast flow of milk, short feeds could be consistent with over-supply or fast let-down etc. Anything sound familiar? Help with positioning and attachment (latch) is often useful in these sorts of situation.

noone has checked roof of mouth, what is a bubble palette? 6 days oldd, not gaining, the occasional greenish poo, 3 or 4 wet nappies a day i think, can't feel anything under tongue, but thought it could be upper frenulum thing

The national breastfeeding helpline is on 0300 100 0212. I'd suggest you give them a call in the morning and talk it through with someone. At 6 days the chances are that this is something that one of the volunteers will readily be able to help you with . there are other helplines too, but I don't have the numbers to hand. A weight loss of up to 10% of birthweight within the first week or so is within normal range. Have you seen any bright yellow poo? How much poo and how often? Are you sore?
