This Morning <<snigger>> at breastfeeding...

At the end of today's This Morning, they said that they had some lactivists on tomorrow's show.

Lorraine Kelly said (with a face like a bulldog chewing a lemon-flavoured wasp) that these were women who breastfed their children up to the age of four, and Phillip Schofield said, "Bitty!"

So, can we look forward to a sensible debate and reasoned discussion tomorrow? I seriously doubt it...

Just emailed the following:

'I understand you will be covering breastfeeding tomorrow. I was very perturbed by your introduction of the subject today. Please note:

"UNICEF estimates that 1.5 million babies worldwide die each year because they are not breastfed. In England and Wales 29% of mothers do not breastfeed. Yet we know that breast is best for the health of mother and baby.
What we need is an environment where women of all ethnic, social and cultural backgrounds are comfortable with feeding their baby anywhere and at any time. To do this we need to create an atmosphere of support from friends, family, partners and health professionals. The more vocal this support the stronger the encouragement to new mothers to take up and carry on breastfeeding their infant."

(from www.breastfeeding.nhs.uk/default.asp)

This is a serious subject and not, PLEASE, something to be sniggered at.

Thank you.'

Going to email something similar to the Loose Women team.

RTKangaMummy · 10/05/2005 10:19

THIS MORNING IS JUST ABOUT TO START!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

juniperdewdrop · 10/05/2005 10:20

I know and I can't watch it as ds2 is glued to cbeebies

RTKangaMummy · 10/05/2005 10:24

Just as a matter of interest I know nothing about it

What is the upper age when you think breast feeding should stop?

But in my ignorance was thinking about 4 or 5 years children would be off breast feeding completely or is that too old or not old enough?

BTW I don't want an aguement just wondered

starlover · 10/05/2005 10:32

it'll be on at 12

RTKangaMummy · 10/05/2005 10:52

They are talking about feeding 4 year olds

When did you stop or do you think you will stop?

starlover · 10/05/2005 12:14

so did anyone get something read out?
i thouight it was an ok discussion actually

hotmama · 10/05/2005 12:18

Missed it - what happened then!

Twiga · 10/05/2005 12:18

Thought that the discussion wasn't bad at all, and resonably well balanced. Was interesting to see just how non-clingy the toddlers involved were and for me it answered a couple of concerns re: extended bf. As a first time mum to be in Aug, I don't know how things will work out for us, but want to give bf a go and would't be put off of extended bf from what I saw this morning.

sweetkitty · 10/05/2005 12:20

Thought it was a very balanced debat, handled well by Fern and Philip (perhaps they were scared of the mumsnet backlash)

Personally I am planning to wean DD off the breast at 12 months I feel this is right for me. I've just found out I'm pregnant as well and would like a few months to myself before I start feeding number 2 this may sound selfish but I think I've done so well to get to 12 months!

Donbean · 10/05/2005 12:20

i feel completely guilty and inadequate for only bf till ds was 7.5 months after that.

sweetkitty · 10/05/2005 12:21

Sorry forgot to add I have nothing against BFing toddlers, in private or public.

pixiefish · 10/05/2005 12:22

it was fairly ok APART for some women viewers who emailed in with really negative comments. They didn't really address these comments although they did have a nutrionist there who was very good. Faith (is that her name) the presenter bfed till 18 months and the nutritionist bfed till 2 years 3 months. fairly positive apart for the viewers comments although they'd argue that they were trying to be balanced

Twiga · 10/05/2005 12:28

Donbean, dont' feel guilty, I think they hit the nail on the head when they said that folk should do what is best/works for them and their wee ones. Much better conclusion to have reached than the stupid loose women debate.

RTKangaMummy · 10/05/2005 12:32

Pixiefiah

Angela is a phychatrist {sp} not nutritonist [sp]

Sorry for spelling

RTKangaMummy · 10/05/2005 12:33

Sorry

pixiefish

jakeybob · 10/05/2005 12:35

I thought they showed bf in a good light. I felt the negative comment off the one viewer made her seem a right prat.

docket · 10/05/2005 12:36

I thought it was good and although that ranting viewer just sounded like a loon, I don't think her point was taken seriously.

docket · 10/05/2005 12:36

although?!

beansprout · 10/05/2005 12:44

Seemed ok. Just gave some air time to something that tends to be hidden away. Has to be a good thing. These were the women who were in the article in The Guardian the other week so some damn lazy researchers on that programme!!!

beckymumof3 · 10/05/2005 13:17

Donbeam you don't need to feel guilty at all! I have struggled and struggled with my 3 and the longest I managed was a difficult and painful 3.5 months and I feel triumphant about that!

franch · 10/05/2005 13:29

Yep, I feel it was pretty OK too. Let's take the credit!
