Is there anything I can take for sinusitis?

Hey all

I've had sinusitis for the last 4 days, can't seem to shift it - every time I think I'm getting better it gets worse again. Horrible at night in particular (probably cos of lying down).

I wondered if there is anything that is safe to take that would help, other than paracetemol?

(NB Unless it gets much worse I don't want to take antibiotics as i had thrush when DD was little even littler for seven whole weeks and am paranoid about ever getting it again!)

Oh, I am, obviously (otherwise why would I ask??) exclusively BF

I feel for you, Kiwi, and paracetemol will do bugger all.

I have bad sinus problems (last experienced when I just found out I was pregnant (argghhh) so no antibiotics or good strong painkillers for me) and have had problems for the last three years. I would suggest going to your GP and seeing what he can prescibe painkiller-wise. If it continues get a referral.

I bothered my doctor about it for all those three years and finally got an ENT appointment when three months PG and found out I have polyps. So I was right but can't do anything about it until I've given birth...

A neti pot, used regularly will stop the build up of pressure and keep your toobs cleaned out...
How old is the lo? I ask because once my dd was over 6mths old I did take the odd strong remedy for headaches as it was unbearable...

My gp said a beconase spray was ok.

I kept being told I just had 'normal pregancy runny nose' by the midwives when actually it was sinusitis.

The beconase spray won't cure the sinusitis but it does calm a lot of the inflammation and make it easier to bear!

Thanks guys! Bucharest - DD is just over 5 months. Am just about taking the edge of it with ibuprofen (sudden horrible thought - that is ok with bfing isn't it??) Thankfully DH is back home now and has morning off so I can rest. Felt really sorry for DD today, she must have been so bored being indoors all day with her mum groaning beside her... bless her, she was so patient with me!

Just remembered - ask your chemist about a sinus rinse kit if your GP says you can't take anything else. The ENT woman gave me one, though I haven't so far had to use it. A friend of mine uses one and says that it's easy.

Cant offer any advice just my sympathy.

I had an ear infestion when BF DS who was around 3 months - and what I think was mild sinusitis - I was told by a GP (locum) to take lockets!

But i would be happy to take something stronger if my baby was over 6 months.

Thanks TamTam! I would take something stronger even now if she was a big baby - but somehow because she's such a little shrimp (hovering between 2nd and 9th centiles) it somehow seems to me - however unscientifically - that it would affect her more!

Feeling a little better this evening after steam bath number 495454 of the day
