Semi skimmed milk ok from 6 months old?

One of the nursery nurses mentioned they had received some new guidelines saying semi skimmed milk was now considered ok for babies from 6 months old.
Has anyone else heard this or know where I can find the info?
(info passed on second hand from dh - I will ask them more when I go in later!)

nope - not as far as i know

babies do not need and should not have a low fat diet

they need the fat soluble vitamins in the milk, plus the fat itself

Well when my DS1 was a baby (he's now 17!), cows' milk was allowed from 6 months. With DS2 (now 14) it was changed to 12 months. But as we had not experienced any problems with DS1, we ignored this!

But I would have thought that it would be full fat milk, as children need the fat for their growth/development?

Still 2yo as far as I know, up til last month when on a Nutrition course run by the local Pediatric Dietician.

Thanks - I thought it was a bit odd too.
ds is 6 months in a couple of weeks - has been excl bf but am running out of ebm so was probably in a 'clutching at straws' moment when I heard it!

I thought is was formula/breastmilk until 12 months, and then full fat cows milk until 2 years.

I could have saved 4 months worth of expense on formula if I was wrong!

Cow's milk from 12 months although it is allowed in foods from 6 months. Semi-skimmed from 2y and skimmed from 5y. Mind you, ds is nearly 8 now, so that advice is probably oputdated now!

misdee · 26/05/2009 10:09

cows milk in FOOD from 6months, noit as a main drink. that should be breastmilk or formula as main source of nutriation until a year

CherryChoc · 26/05/2009 11:12

And the milk in food should be full-fat if you use cow's milk

cory · 26/05/2009 11:50

The point of full fat afaik is not that half a teaspoon of semi-skimmed in a pudding would poison them, but that there isn't enough nutrition in semi to keep them going.

Jackstini · 27/05/2009 09:51

Would there be enough nutrition if it was only 2 drinks a day and bf the rest of the time?
Have heard of babies having water a couple of times a day and then bfing...

No it wouldn't. Babies under 12 months shouldn't have cow's milk as a drink at all - should only be formula or breast milk. I'd be slightly alarmed by your nursery nurse!

spicemonster · 27/05/2009 09:56

Water is different - it isn't a food. You can give water as a drink but in addition to formula/breastmilk, not instead of

Jackstini · 27/05/2009 21:01

So could I give water at nursery instead of formula if I am bfing him at approx 8am before, 1pm at lunch and 5pm at pick up, plus all evening/night? (he will also have solids 3 x day)
Will def speak to nursery tomorrow!
