Don't you think she's a bit old for all that?................

Said to me by my (female if that makes any difference) GP, regarding my continued feeding of my 15mo dd.

Why, why, why do they do this? I fed her brother until he was nearly 2 and want to do the same thing with my dd but I still feel knocked.

She also informed me-

There was no nutritional benefit at this age

I will make dd 'clingy'

I am probably doing for 'my own benefit'ffs

She then said 'obviously all that's off the record, not the offical line'?????

I went to ask about my anxiety and depression, and she told me there are no ad's or similar that she can prescribe me whilst bfing, and that I should 'think about what's most important and go back when I have stopped feeding'.

I'm sure this isn't true and I am planning on going to see another GP at the practice (luckily there are loads) but I am and , at this and just wish I had said something at the time, but I was too upset and just left.

Stupid bloody woman! Can you complain about her/see if she can be sent for re-education (sounds a bit Stalinist, but ykwim)?

You know she's talking bollocks and what you're doing is great, right?

purpleflower · 23/05/2009 11:03

Thats terrible

Sertraline is safe to take while breastfeeding.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 23/05/2009 11:12

That is a load of bollocks. I have recently been prescribed Sertraline and I'm breastfeeding DS who is 10 months old.

Please go back and see another GP, and please speak to the practice manager about making a complaint against the GP who you saw. She is putting her own views ahead of treating you in the correct way.

You are doing absolutely the right thing by continuing to BF - you carry on

HumphreyCobbler · 23/05/2009 11:17

complain about her - she should not be denying you treatment due to her prejudices.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 23/05/2009 11:37

Aww thanks all, I heart mn

I will go back, and I know she is wrong but it's really nice to have some support.

Bloody hell.

Complain. A lot.

And then ask her to put her opinion in writing so you can discuss it with the head of maternity services at the PCT. Why is she so keen for you to stop bfing?

How do fucking twunts like that get to be GPs? Is she a moron?

mel1981 · 23/05/2009 12:04

I would complain, surely shes meant to encourage you or at least keep her opinions to herself if she doesnt agree.
5yrs ago I had to stop breast feeding my son so I could take ADs but a lot has prob changed since then...maybe ask to see a different doctor to get a second opinion? I would make a complaint too especially if she is wrong.
good luck x

PinkTulips · 23/05/2009 12:16

on your behalf

ds1 was far older than that and my lovely gp didn't bat an eyelid and spent ages pouring through the big medicines book making sure she was giving me the safest abs possible.

complain, complain, complain.

she's an idiot who's putting her own WRONG opinions ahead of a patients wellbeing and she absolutely needs to be stopped.

how many women with PND is she denying ads too because they're still feeding? how many women have given up feeding because of her? she's a disgrace to her profession and you absolutely have to cause a fusss about this

so sorry you had to go through that, i don't blame you for feeling a bit shakey and upset... she's supposed to be the professional after all

Geekylass · 23/05/2009 12:22

There is no 'off the record' while she's giving you advice in her professional capacity. Complain, complain, complain - its the only way you'll get doctors like her to bring their knowledge up to date. Her behaviour is absolutely shocking.

tiktok · 23/05/2009 12:22

WildThings, you can find referenced information to show your doctor about ADs and bf here: www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk

Click through to the drugs factsheets.
If doc refuses to prescribe, then you can change your doctor.

mummalish · 23/05/2009 13:23

That is exactly what I was told by a gp recently, gosh, it could be the same one...

I was furious, and went to see another gp at the same practice who prescribed AD yhat is suitable to use whilst breastfeeding. Been on them for a while now and it has had no effect on my LO.

How dare anyone make such a personal comment, makes me so angry.

foxytocin · 23/05/2009 14:02

go back with the sheet that TT suggested.

Put Dr Newman's leaflet on breastfeeding toddlers and Kellymom's on the benefits of extended feeding as enclosures with your letter of complaint to the practice manager, suggesting she photocopy them to all the GP's in the practice.

I can't see how a Dr can say something 'off the record' during a 10 min appt where we are paying them to give a service. They are always in a position of power inside their office and everything they say has power to help or damage.

I think I will go hug my GP and practice nurse who knows I tandem feed and are both consider it normal.
