Apologies if I have posted this in an inappropriate thread but couldn't find anywhere more suited!

So my DS is 6 months now and am stuggling with what to give him for lunch pref suitable for 2.5 year old too (minus the blending!)

Its only been a coulpe of days and we have done scrammbled eggs, ham fruit & veg puree's etc.

Any ideas? Want to stay away from chicken, meats etc as usually cook this type of meal for dinner.

Also are tinned tomatoes ok if they same 'salt trace'?

Another question:- during evening meals how do you 'gravy up' your dinners if you can't use oxo, stocks etc. My DS is not a fan of cheese so finding it hard to make evening meals for example chicken, veg & spuds or bangers & mash a little more interesting. Without a gravy they are too dry to blend. Any help would be most appreciated!!

I give my 7mo DD fruit or veg at lunchtime - sometimes puree, sometimes lightly steamed pieces she can pick up and feed herself. Today she's having apple and pear.

I don't think you need to worry too much about what a 6mo has to eat - they are still getting most of their energy from their milk feeds. Solid food is just about experimenting with different tastes and textures at this point I think.

There are some great weaning threads - check them out for ideas! Good luck.

what do you give your 2.5 year old? do you know you don't need to blend for a 6 month old?

Higgledyhouse · 21/05/2009 12:23

my ds has 14 ozs of milk a day and 3 meals so believe he does need to eat a decent lunch rather than simply food to give him experiences of textures etc.

My daughter will eat general things, spaghetti/pasta, rolls, sandwiches etc. I don't think my ds could manage a ham roll, eggy & soilders, pancakes at this stage.

Wouldn't dream of giving him pieces of meat or pasta etc yet without blending perhaps in a coulpe of months though.

Thanks for replies

There is a weaning board here with lots of threads about first solids. (Not to say your post isn't welcome here, just that you will probably get more replies there.

If he's 6 months he can really have anything, apart from honey. You need to avoid whole nuts, grapes, round things which he could choke on, and don't put any extra salt in your cooking and buy reduced salt things where possible but other than that, anything goes really. DS started off with toast (1 slice, cut into triangles, no butter). We didn't really do lunch to start with though, we started with the evening meal.

As ruddynorah says, if you don't want to blend it, don't - your DS should be able to pick foods up with his hands and eat them by himself, which is helpful as you don't have to be as involved - you do have to watch them and make sure the food is a suitable size and shape - about chip/finger sized is appropriate. This approach is called Baby Led Weaning, so you'll find more info if you do a search on that.

Of course purees are fine as well, if you want to go that route. Generally different fruit & veg are good - try mashed banana?

DS was eating steak at 6 months the night before his teeth came through!! Quite surreal but fun!

Sorry just saw your stock question - you can buy baby stock cubes from Boots which have hardly any salt in. Also Kallo low salt stock cubes from Sainsbury's. HTH

piece of meat is fine! as is pasta. will make your life a whole heap easier if you give both your children the same thing.

DS2 (now 8months) has always eaten the same as DS1 (now 19months). Lunch is either a sandwich (cheese, ham, chicken) with fruit (apple, orange, kiwi, banana, grapes, melon) pieces of cucumber and tomato, organix crisps are a good standby,

u just make sure that DS2's lunch is in fist size bits for him to hold and ram in the general direction of his lunch

HTH
