My dd is 5 weeks 2mrw she was 9lbs 8oz at birth and bf on demand since birth she has been gaining weight well she went down to 8lbs10 after the first few days then each time she has been weighed she has gained she was weighed on tues and is now 11lbs hv says she looks great her nappies are yellow and wet poo everytime i change her

I have been really happy how easy i have found bf itself this time round she latches on well i feel comfertable everything seemed to be going well then last week she started screaming constantly and if she wasnt screaming she was sleeping or attatched to me this has gone on for the whole week and has started to settle a little now so i thought it may have been a growth spurt everyone talks about.

problem now is she feeds for 10 min at a time (always has) then i wind her then she wants on again and she gulps like the flow is too fast so i take her off and let the milk flow off into a towel then put her back on she will seem happier and feed more then she will cry come off i wind her she will do this over and over still on the first breast she will cry and root for more so i feed her more then she throws up mega projectile (sp)out her nose etc and calm down for 10 mins then want to do it all over again im at my wits end i feel so bad when she throws up so much,if she goes onto second breast she has mountains of sick so i dont offer it now.

Is it overfeeding? how do i stop it? she never seems satisfied she has only ever once fell asleep at the breast (during the day).I have tried to introduce a dummy to soothe her but she wont take it and when she does she will either gag or suck it like she is starving then spit it out and scream, she co-sleeps with us and nights are fine she feeds and drops back off no problem. i have told this to hv but she says its ok and im just producing a lot of milk as long as baby has plenty wet and dry nappies and gaining weight all is ok but it sure doesnt feel ok!

sounds a bit like reflux to me.

How is she at lying down or does she prefer to be more upright?, also how is she when not feeding, placid, unhappy, fidgety?

Pinkbump3 · 20/05/2009 23:19

she has to be upright, she never seems happy always fidgety then crying till either asleep or feeding again.

again sympomatic of reflux. Take her to gp and ask advice. Probably baby gaviscon.

If its so, then she will grow out of it, very distressing though, my nephew has only just grown out of his at a year properly.

Wish you luck, let us know how you get on.

Thank you i have just looked up reflux and she does seem to have a lot of the symptoms so i will make an appt to ge her checked. thanks xx

sounds like my dd but in my case it wasn't reflux but oversupply, it settled by about 12 weeks (but got lots better earlier than that). the projectile vomits were because she had taken in a bit more than she had room for but they did settle.

that said i am curious now about reflux, off to google...

pinkbump3 - check out over supply in the archives...it's not 'ok' as it is distressing and uncomfortable for the baby and inconvenient for the mother. It is easily dealt with.

Pinkbump3 · 21/05/2009 14:50

i did think at first it was over supply as i leak a LOT and feeds tend to be messy,i expressed a bottle for dh to give to dd one night last week so i could take my other dds to cinema and expressed almost 4oz from one side and only took around 5mins, ithought it was a bit much and very quick.

oh my sympathies, block feeding really helped for me, i started by sticking to the same side for 2 hours but that wasn't enough, so i had to gradually increase the length of time, i ended up going 6 hours per side (!) for one day but it did the trick! (and i kept a v careful eye on wet nappies that day to be sure i wasn't overdoing it). do you find you get engorged? until i did the block feeding my breasts were never soft after a feed and the milk would spray for a really long way across the room! it settled though.

Oh thanks i will give anything a go. hoochiemooma i do eat quite a bit of dairy and my dd2 who is 8 is dairy intolerant but i never bf her she was a soya milk baby (dont get me started on soya! i wont make that mistake again)so it is very possible that could be contributing to her problems although i never knew that it could pass through breastmilk i asked the HV and she said it was unlikely to pass through to her.

also babyphat i do get engorged and feel full and quite hard all the time and my milk would spray for miles if i dont hold a cloth to them

i will give cutting out dairy a go and try keeping her on the one side for a few feeds and see how we go thanks for the advice. x

Thanks for all the great advice, just a wee update i have cut right back on dairy (some minor slip ups but will try and eliminate it completely) and have tried "block" feeding, yesterday and today she seems a lot calmer and has been dare i say at some points she is "content" sitting in her bouncer for a while and falling asleep at the breast more often i hope this lasts and things are on the right track. Fingers crossed X
