A question about tongue tie

Can a baby have a mild tongue tie that stretches out a bit?

Does a normal baby tongue come to a point like, say, mine does, or do they all have a little dib at the end even if the tongue comes over the teeth somewhat?

So it's two questions about tongue tie. Sorry.

It's really bugging me.

Hello

Who is possibly mildly tongue tied?

wastingmyeducation · 20/05/2009 09:52

DS who is one now. We had problems with painful nipples and slow weight growth at the start.

He clearly wasn't completely tongue-tied, but the tip of his tongue dibs in.

He hasn't said any proper words yet that I could identify and his babbling sounds sound like he's not using the tip of his tongue.

my LO had a tongue tie which was snipped at 5 weeks. we couldn't tell by looking at the shape of his tongue - the feeding consultant diagnosied it by having a good feel under his tongue.

just some extra info for you - they said if child was older than 12 weeks it would be a general anesthetic job! we thought that was a bit scary so got it done while he was still little in case it didn't fix itself.

I'm just not sure if it's something to worry about or not.

I'd hate his speech to be affected, but don't know anything about how much variation in baby tongues there might be or what impact it can have.

Hypochondriac mum and her pfb?

both my boys have/had tongue tie.

yes, it is possible for it to be mild and yes it can (and often does) stretch as they get older.

my eldest is 4 now, and has no speech problems at all despite being tongue tied

my littlest had his snipped at 3 weeks old, as he couldn't breastfeed properly.
he is 18m now but doesn't really talk much

a "normal" tongue will come to a point yes. the little heart-shaped dib you describe is indicative of tongue tie, regardless of how far the tongue can stick out.

when we had ds2's snipped the lady said they would never snip them just in case of speech problems. there is no actual proof that it causes speech probs (I am also tongue tied, it tends to be hereditary and i've never had speech probs either)

if your son is over a year old he would need a GA to have it done, and I think it's highly unlikely that they would agree to do it just in case.

he's too young to tell if it is causing problems at the moment. I would wait and see

Hi, my daughter had a slight tongue tie snipped at 5 weeks due to breastfeeding discomfort. Again, my understanding is that it is unlikely to lead to speech problems so a wait & see approach is probably best.

Thanks too SazzlesA, x-posted!

I'll mention it next week when I take him for his immunisation.
