14 month old still on some formula...

DS just doesn't like whole cows milk so we have been mixing it with his usual formula and trying to reduce the amount of formula until it is fully cows milk. HV said that was ok at first. Now he is nearly 14 months and still won't take the full cows milk or even with a little formula in it. There has to be at least 40 formula 60 cows milk.

It is a nightmare to get him to take any kind of milk - if it is in a cup, he takes a big gulp, realised it is milk n then lets it all pour out of his mout down his front! He will only really take a bottle before bed time and the rest of his milk intake I try to make up with porridge made with whole cows milk, yoghurt, cheese.

Anyway, just wondering - is there any problem with leaving the mix of 40% formula 60% cows milk for the time being just so he will at least take his night time bottle?

Thanks

in the scheme of things, yes, leave it at what suits him. he is thriving? eating well? i have a 14 month old, youngest of my 5,and he also has some formula at bedtime. i've never worried, and all my other dc are sickeningly healthy!!

I have a 3 year old who still has up to 4 bottles of formula a day. SO WHAT??? She loves it and it's good for her. As soon as i stopped giving it to my eldest two girls, they stopped drinking milk at all, even on cereal, which is far worse in my opinion. They were all fully breastfed up to one. My baby will be the same. Milk is far too important to mess around with. Stick with what he likes. Good luck x

There's nothing wrong with him having formula past 12 months - it's just that cow's milk is cheaper and easier. He won't be harmed, and he'll grow out of it when he is ready

Phew - thanks... I thought I might get a tad slated for the question. It would be great if he likes cows milk cos - like you say - it is much cheaper and we are soooooooooo skint just now.

Anyway, you are right. If he drinks the formula he gets the milk and nutrients as well as the extra vitamins etc. If I try to cut it down or give him cows milk he won't take any then I stress about him eating his yoghurt, cheese n porridge with lots of milk which I feel bungs him up a lot.

Thanks very much for your answers. You really have set my mind at ease

Are you eligible for the Healthy Start vouchers? You can buy cow's milk or formula with them.
