Should I say something?

Hi,

A colleague and his wife had a baby 4 weeks ago - c-section and traumatic birth but all well now, the baby was big!

When she was pregnant, they asked me loads about breastfeeding and I answered what I knew and then sent through Kellymom and mumsnet etc etc.

The bf has been going well - the baby sounds fab - lots of feeding and sleeps at night! But... the baby has only just regained his birth weight after 4 weeks and I know that they've given him a dummy and feed quite rigidly... I know it could be absolutely fine, but could they heading for a weight gain prob? Should I say anything about feeding instead of giving dummy - will it definitely be making an impact on her supply? I had a slow weight gain baby so I don't want to just use my experience.

I was wondering whether to just wait and see if a problem does develop and then help, but that seems a bit wrong too? Help please!

Thanks,
Anna

have they asked you for advice?

If not, then say nothing, lots of babies grow slowly, (got 3 myself), all perfectly healthy, and supply not a problem.

i would maybe just ask how they're getting on and then if they say anything about the weight gain you could mention how great feeding on demand is etc etc in a "this is what I did" kind of way.

otherwise I probably wouldn't say anything. ooh unless you can find a good article on it and just say you came across it the other day and thoughtt hey might be interested

4 weeks to regain weight in a big baby isn't too bad, big babies often lose more to start with.

I would keep out of it, if feeding is going fine and baby is fed regularly it is fine. I had a big baby and fed at regular intervals, weight gain was fine. DD was a smaller baby and had more frequent feeds. If she is feeding regularly her supply will be fine, DS fed once every four hours for 20 mins, took a full feed so didn't need to be suckled or anything until anouther 4 hrs. He had a dummy to sooth him in between.

I had a 10lb 2oz baby who took a good 4 weeks to regain his birth weight. Bigger babies can be slower to regain due to something called 'catchdown growth' which is where they are extra well nourished in utero and aren't actually meant to be that big.

Unless they specifically say they are being hassled about the baby's weight gain or ask you're advice I would stay out of it, personally.
