Hi

I posted this in general health but was advised to post it here to. Anyone with any advice? Thanks

I broke my foot several weeks ago and have been in plaster since. Went to the hospital today hoping to get the plaster off. Unfortunately i was not given the all-clear I was x-rayed again and saw the consultant. The doctor said he suspected ligament damage and sent me to have a ct scan. He said that I might need an operation and it might take place tomorrow but nothing more was said

By the time I had the CT the doctors had all left. One of the nurses phoned me at home to say that I should have been sent back to the ortho clinic to get another plaster and that I should not eat or drink anything after midnight in case I need an operation. I am meant to report to the hospital at 9.30 where the doctor wil decide whether i can just get another plaster or whether I will get an opertion. From what the nurse said I assume I will be operated on straight after ortho clinic

Problem is with my ds. He is 6 months old and has not yet taken a bottle or solids. We have tried him a couple of times with a bottle and he has chewed the teat and spat out any milk.

My questions are

  • will i get a general anesthetic? (sp)
  • will i be kept in overnight?
  • are they obliged to find me a room with accomodation for my baby too so i can look after him overnight? He still wakes several times a night for a feed
  • if I can't keep him what do i do? send him home with dh and cross my fingers?

Can you phone the hospital back and ask them these questions? You could try calling the orthopaedic ward and asking them if the clinic's closed now. They should be able to tell you whether you'll need to stay in after the operation.

I hope I can help!

I was in hospital for two nights recently with what was diagnosed as gallstones and I was able to have my BF DS in with me for both nights. They got me a side room and a cot was brought over from the children's wards.

When they said on A&E that I would be admitted; I asked about DS and they were absolutely fine with it and couldn't be more helpful. The hospital is Unicef Baby Friendly certified so I think they have to accommodate BFing mums, although I can't find anything about that specifically on the Baby Friendly website.

I subsequently went in to have my gallbladder removed and although I didn't have DS in with me overnight, I was able to feed him a few hours after the operation once I was round from the anaesthetic. there is a lot of bad advice out there about pumping and dumping for 24 hours and such like, but from what I read once you are awake then the anaesthetic is not in your system in sufficient quantities to be transmitted to the baby.

you can find out if your local hospital is baby friendly Here

And there is some information on anaesthetics on kellymom.com

Good Luck, and I hope you aren't in too much pain.

Oh, and meant to say that they can't in any conscience let you send him home with DH and cross your fingers, I hope to goodness. He is a BF baby who won't accept teats or bottles and needs his mum.

But, if he had some expressed milk would he take it from a syringe or cup?

and do you have enough of it stored to last a whole night without you? I had about 40fl ozs stored and he got through about 30 of that in just over 12 hours.

and also re my post....I could have had DS in with me after my op (it was a private hospital this time), but we decided that I would need some recuperation time and a decent sleep which is why he wasn't with me.

I can say that I damaged my cartilage a couple of years ago then found out I was pregnant- they discussed the option of doing it under local anaesthetic and said it wouldn't be overly pleasant but recovery was far quicker so it was an option. In the end I cancelled it (then miscarried ) but then went on to have it under GA- I was home within a few hours.

I have just managed to destroy the cartilage in my other knee and am due to have it operated on in the next few weeks- I've just finished bfing 15mo ds so thankfully it's not an issue this time!

Thanks for the advice. The ortho clinic was empty before I went up to ct so I couldn't ask any questions. Will pack an overnight bag for me and ds and take it to hosp tomorrow. I'll see what they say and if he can't stay I'll ask if I can have op on Mon which will give some time for pumping and cup/ teat training. Hosp was v pro bf when I had my dcs so heres hoping. Got a call out to my cousin who is an anaesthetist. She may be able to advise on options

Will report back and let you know. Heres hoping that I don't need op and will be back in plaster.

On general anaesthetic, my ds2 was born by emergency CS under GA, I would have been allowed to attempt to bf as soon as I came round, actually I did attempt to but was shaking too much to hold him (probably a reaction to GA), but I did try again within just a few hours. So if GA doesn't rule out BF then I don't see how it could with a 6 month old.

LackaDAISYcal · 15/05/2009 00:39

oh god the shaking after a GA....

Good Luck for tomorrow

LackaDAISYcal · 15/05/2009 00:40

and slight hijack.....have you moved back to Leeds yet elkiedee?

elkiedee · 15/05/2009 09:22

Lackadaisycal, no, I think it probably is me, I come from Leeds and want to move back, but the plan has been to do it next year, after going back to work for 6 months. I thought it would be good to move about a year before ds1 starts school, ie between May (end of my 6 months) and August 2010, but the state of the housing and job market make it all a bit more uncertain.

Nulgirl, hope you'll be able to make arrangements which work. Let us know.

LackaDAISYcal · 15/05/2009 13:44

ah...phew . We talked on the Leeds Bloomers thread when I was pregnant with/had just had DD....I was daisybump/daisyboo and various other combinations of daisy during that time. Can't believe that she is nearly two already and I have another one as well!!

You must feel the same!

nulgirl · 15/05/2009 17:03

Update - went back to the hospital and tey have said that I don't need the operation. Another few weeks in plaster should suffice. Phew!!

Going to start weaning this weekend. Got the incentive of a wedding in Ireland at the end of July. Mum has said that if he'll take a bottle then they'll have both dcs overnight and let us have our first childfree night since dd was born in 06. A great incentive.

nul, Great news re no operation needed, and about 10 weeks to introduce your ds to other ways of having milk, and other food.

Lackadaisy, you've got a good memory. I think we've been on the same threads on various subjects over the last couple of years, and I've probably read lots of posts from you without posting too. You're on my Facebook too, unless you've deleted me as a friend.

LackaDAISYcal · 15/05/2009 19:42

That's great news nulgirl . I hope it heals well and that you can get your DS to take a bottle so you can have your child free wedding weekend.

elkiedee, I haven't deleted you . You were in the category of my facebook frineds who are MNers but who I couldn't quite put MN name with RL name, but I have you now
